Broncos-Raiders and Week 4 Picks

The Broncos are 2-1 but it feels like they are 0-3. Russell Wilson and offense have put up 16,16, and 11 points in their first three games. Head coach Nathaniel Hackett has been criticized for his game management, and two close and boring wins over the Texans and 49ers at home have quelled expectations. Nonetheless, they can quiet down a lot of noise by going to Las Vegas and beating their rival Raiders and old friend Josh McDaniels. At 0-3, the Raiders are desperate for a win, which means this game is very difficult. The Raiders have won four in a row over the Broncos. I would really love to see Wilson have a big-time game and the Broncos pound the Raiders and send them to 0-4, but I'm not sure that will happen. I think the Raiders are more desperate and they need this game more.

Prediction: LAS VEGAS (-3) over Denver

Final Score: Raiders-24 Broncos-17

Last Week's Record: 10-5-1

Overall Record: 24-21-4

(HOME TEAM IN CAPS)

Now, onto the picks for Week 4........

Minnesota (-2) over New Orleans (In London): The Vikings and Saints head to London in the first of the international games this year. The Vikings are 2-1 and the Saints are 1-2. I like Minnesota to get to 3-1

Cleveland (-1) over ATLANTA: I think the Browns go on the road and get to 3-1 with a win over the 1-2 Falcons.

Buffalo (-3) over BALTIMORE: This is the best game of the week and it is in the 1:00 window on Sunday afternoon. The Bills are 2-1 after a tough loss at Miami. The Ravens are 2-1 coming off a big win over New England. I think this will be a fun and entertaining back and forth game with Josh Allen making a play at the end to put the Bills over the top.

DALLAS (-3) over Washington: I went back and forth with this game, but I think the Cowboys will do what it takes and get to 3-1.

DETROIT (-4) over Seattle: The Lions blew last week's game against Minnesota and are now 1-2. They host the 1-2 Seahawks, who have not looked good the past two weeks. I gotta think the Lions will take care of business at home here.

HOUSTON (+5) over Chargers: I think the Chargers will find a way to win this game, but they are a banged up 1-2 team. Houston is 0-2-1 but have been in every game. They are a very feisty home underdog here.

Tennessee (+4) over INDIANAPOLIS: I haven't been too impressed with the 1-1-1 Colts-even after their win over the Chiefs last week. The Titans are 1-2 and I think Tennessee goes into Indy and knocks off the Colts.

GIANTS (-3) over Chicago: The Giants are 2-1 and host the 2-1 Bears. Neither team has looked impressive this year, but somehow they both have winning records. This is a spot that the Giants usually screw up, but I think they will find a way to get past the Bears this week.

Jacksonville (+7) over PHILADELPHIA: This is a really good game between the 3-0 Eagles and the 2-1 Jaguars. I have been impressed with how Trevor Lawrence has looked so far this year, and Doug Pederson has done a nice job early on with this group. Now, Pederson heads back to Philly to take on his old team. Jalen Hurts has looked really good this year and the Eagles are flying. This is a fun game and I think Philly wins but it is close.

PITTSBURGH (-3) over Jets: I just can't trust the Jets-even with QB Zach Wilson coming back to start from injury. I think the Steelers win a 19-13 type of game to get to 2-2.

Arizona (+2) over CAROLINA: I just can't trust Carolina just yet. At 1-2, I'm not sure what I am getting from them. I like Arizona, with their backs against the wall, to go on the road and eek out a win over the Panthers.

New England (+10) over GREEN BAY: I think the Packers will win the game at home in Lambeau, but I think the Patriots will keep it close. Look for a lower scoring game, but GB gets to 3-1 with the win.

Kansas City (-1) over TAMPA BAY: I think KC goes on the road on SNF and gets some revenge on the Bucs for the Super Bowl loss from a few years ago. This should be a fun game with Pat Mahomes matching up with Tom Brady. I like the Chiefs in this one.

SAN FRANCISCO (-1) over Rams: Monday Night Football features a rematch of last year's NFC Championship Game. I think the 49ers will rebound from their loss in Denver and take down the Rams to put both teams are 2-2 on the year.

Week 4 TNF PIck

 CINCINNATI (-3) over Miami

Broncos Edge Niners 11-10

It wasn't pretty but the Broncos defeated the Niners 11-10 on Sunday night to improve to 2-1 on the season. It was a punt-fest, and once again the Broncos defense carried the team to the victory. Here are my thoughts on the game...

1) Broncos punter Corliss Waitman was the star of the game. His punting was a huge difference in field position and helped the Broncos get the win. I know it is sad when the punter is huge difference in the game, but that was the case in this one.

2) The Broncos defense played lights out once again. They forced two big turnovers late in the game to seal the victory and forced a safety as well. They are really playing at a high level.

3) Randy Gregory made a huge impact once again this week. He was all over the field. His constant pressure was a big factor. Bradley Chubb had a solid game as well. This pass-rushing duo could be a big asset for the Broncos this year.

4) Russell Wilson had another pedestrian game and the offense wasn't good, but he made plays on the last drive to help Denver get the go-ahead score and take the 11-10 lead. His third down throw to Kendall Hinton was classic Russ, and his throw to Courtland Sutton to set up a goal-to-go situation was terrific. I think Wilson and this offense will be fine-just gotta give it more time.

5) As ugly and boring as this win was, a win is a win in the NFL and the Broncos are 2-1 and tied with the Chiefs atop the AFC West. This week is a huge game as they head to Vegas to take on the 0-3 Raiders. The Broncos have lost four in a row to the Raiders and have not won on the road against the Raiders since 2015. Hopefully, that will change this week.

Broncos-49ers and Week 3 Picks!

Until Nathaniel Hackett proves that he can manage the game as the head coach, I have no confidence in this Broncos team. I hope I am wrong, but I think this is a really tough game for the Broncos-even at home. The 49ers are probably better off with Jimmy G at QB now that Trey Lance is out for the season. I don't have a good feeling about this game at all on Sunday night.

Prediction: San Francisco (-1) over DENVER

Final Score: 49ers-27 Broncos-17

Last Week's Record: 6-7-3

Overall Record: 14-16-3

(HOME TEAM IN CAPS)

Now, onto the picks for Week 3....

INDIANAPOLIS (+7) over Kansas City: I like the Colts to cover, but I think KC wins the game outright. I just see it being closer than people think.

Baltimore (-3) over NEW ENGLAND: I think the Ravens will bounce back from their loss last week to Miami and spoil the Patriots home opener.

CAROLINA (+3) over New Orleans: I think the 0-2 Panthers will get their first win of the season this week. They lost two close games and they are due.

Houston (+3) over CHICAGO: The Texans are 0-1-1 lost a close game to Denver last week. The Bears are 1-1, but their offense is really struggling. I think Houston gets their first win of the season here.

Buffalo (-4) over MIAMI: The Dolphins are 2-0 and coming off a huge, comeback win over the Ravens last week. In comes the Bills, who are 2-0 after destroying the Rams and Titans the first two weeks. Look for the Bills and Josh Allen to handle the Fish in Miami.

MINNESOTA (-6) over Detroit: This game has a chance to be good with both teams coming in at 1-1. I think the Vikings bounce back and get to 2-1.

Cincinnati (-3) over JETS: The Bengals lost in the Meadowlands last year to the Jets. At 0-2, they desperately need a win here. They can't start 0-3. The Jets are 1-1 coming off a miracle win in Cleveland last week. I think this game is close, but I'll take Cincy to get their first win.

Las Vegas (-1) over TENNESSEE: I don't like anything I see so far from the Titans this year. At 0-2, they need a win. The Raiders blew a 20 point lead last week and fell to the Cardinals in overtime. At 0-2, they need a win. I think the Raiders are just better than Tennessee, so I'll take them on the road.

Philadelphia (-4) over WASHINGTON: The Eagles and Jalen Hurts have been impressive in their 2-0 start. People are starting to give them buzz as a legitimate NFC contender. Washington is 1-1, but I think the Eagles will have little trouble taking down the Commanders.

Jacksonville (+7) over CHARGERS: There is a good chance that Justin Herbert starts for the Chargers this week after suffering a rib injury in Week 2. Even if he plays, I just think that the Jags are dangerous in this spot. At 1-1, they look feisty. I think they will at least cover the spread in this game.

Green Bay (+3) over TAMPA BAY: Tom Brady takes on Aaron Rodgers in the "Bay of Pigs." I think the Packers will take down the 2-0 Bucs and get to 2-1.

Rams (-3) over ARIZONA: At 1-1, the Rams head to Arizona to take on the 1-1 Cards. The Cardinals stormed all the way back and got a miracle win over the Raiders last week. The Rams took a huge lead over the Falcons and held on late. Neither team has looked impressive, but I'll take LA on the road.

Atlanta (+2) over SEATTLE: The Seahawks came back down to earth last week in a blowout loss to the 49ers. Atlanta battled hard and fought back against the Rams but came up short. I think Atlanta is just the better team here, so I'll back them on the road.

Dallas (+3) over GIANTS: The Giants are 2-0 and has its' fanbase actually excited for the first time in years. The Cowboys are 1-1 and still without Dak Prescott. I think this is a fun game for Monday Night Football, but I think Dallas gets to 2-1 with a big, road win.

Week 3 TNF Pick

 Pittsburgh (+4) over CLEVELAND

Monday, September 19, 2022

Broncos Win 16-9, Improve to 1-1

The Broncos got their first win of the 2022 season on Sunday with a home win over the Texans 16-9. It was not the kind of debut that they wanted. The offense was bad once again in the red zone, they took too many penalties, and Nathaniel Hackett continued to have some really poor in-game management and decisions. A win is a win, but this one was more relief than celebration. Here are my thoughts on the game....

1) The offense still struggled in the red zone. Yesterday, it was a mixture of play-calling and execution. Courtland Sutton had an apparent TD but his foot touched the line and they overturned it. It's the little things that are killing this team so far.

2) Russell Wilson was not very good yesterday, but he got hot in the 4th quarter and hit Eric Saubert with a TD pass to give the Broncos the lead for good. His 3rd and 15 throw to Courtland Sutton was huge. I still think he will be fine, but it is going to take longer than I thought.

3) Injuries are starting to pile up. Jerry Jeudy left the game with an apparent rib injury. Pat Surtain left with a shoulder injury. We don't know the severity yet, but the Broncos can't afford to lose them for a period of time.

4) The defense was great yesterday. The pass rush-especially Randy Gregory- was great. The defense has certainly done its' part this season.

5) Nathaniel Hackett just might not be cut out to be a head coach. His in-game decisions and management was once again really bad. He used all three timeouts halfway through the 4th quarter. The Broncos had multiple delay of game penalties. They had trouble getting the play in on time. There was indecisiveness on Hackett's part on key downs, and they even had to waste a timeout because they didn't have their punt returner back deep. It has been as bad as I can remember two weeks in. Vance Joseph and Vic Fangio were not even this bad. Maybe Hackett just can't cut it as a head coach? It is alarmingly bad.

6) The Broncos stay home and host the 49ers on Sunday Night Football. The 49ers seem like they will be a very tough matchup for Denver this week.

Broncos-Texans and Week 2 Picks

The Broncos come home to Denver for their home opener as a big favorite over the Houston Texans. The Broncos were also big favorites on the road over the Seahawks on Monday night and they lost 17-16. At 0-1, it is not time to hit the panic button just yet, but it is safe to say that they need to win this game on Sunday. The Texans are 0-0-1 after a tie in Week 1, and they are supposed to be in for a rough season, so the Broncos have to take care of business at home. They have had all week to think about the loss in Seattle, and to make matters worse, they have had to endure the scrutiny and criticism of head coach Nathaniel Hackett and his illogical late game management decisions. Until Hackett can prove to me that he can be a solid in-game coach, I have to continue to be worried.

Prediction: Houston (+10) over DENVER

Final Score: Texans-26 Broncos-24

Now, onto the picks for Week 2........

Last Week's Record: 8-8

Overall Record: 8-9

(HOME TEAM IN CAPS)

BALTIMORE (-3) over Miami: Both teams come in at 1-0, but I think the Ravens will get to 2-0 win an easy home win over the Dolphins.

Jets (+6) over CLEVELAND: The Browns are 1-0 and are looking for a rare 2-0 start to their season. They host the 0-1 Jets on Sunday. I think the Browns will win but I'll take the Jets to cover.

JACKSONVILLE (+4) over Indianapolis: The Colts salvaged a tie in Houston in Week 1, and the Jags are 0-1 after losing a close game to Washington. I think the Colts will pull this game out and win, but look for Jacksonville to cover.

Tampa Bay (-2) over NEW ORLEANS: The Saints are 1-0 after pulling out a win in Atlanta last week. The Bucs are 1-0 after beating up on Dallas last Sunday night. I know the Saints have had the Bucs number the last few years, but I like the Bucs in this one.

Carolina (+3) over GIANTS: The Giants had a dramatic, come-from-behind win over the Titans in Week 1. Carolina lost a close game to the Browns. I think the Panthers will bounce back and get the win over the G-Men.

PITTSBURGH (+3) over New England: The Patriots lost to Miami in Week 1 and are now 0-1. The Steelers pulled out an improbable win over the Bengals. I'm not sure why the Steelers are underdogs at home in this game. I think they win outright.

DETROIT (-1) over Washington: The Lions fought hard and lost a close one to the Eagles. At 0-1, they don't want to start 0-2. Washington is 1-0 after a win over Jacksonville. I'm taking Detroit at home to win it.

Seattle (+9) over SAN FRANCISCO: The Seahawks are 1-0 after winning their Super Bowl over the Broncos and Russell Wilson last week. The 49ers are 0-1 after a bad loss at Chicago last week. I think the 49ers will win the game, but look for Seattle to cover.

RAMS (-9) over Atlanta: I think the Rams bounce back after their loss to the Bills last week. I think they do a number on the Falcons.

LAS VEGAS (-5) over Arizona: Both teams come in at 0-1, so they both need to win this game. Look for the Raiders at home to get the win.

DALLAS (+7) over Cincinnati: The Cowboys are without Dak Prescott for a few weeks with a thumb injury. At 0-1, they need backup QB Cooper Rush to play well in his absence. The Bengals are 0-1 and need a win on the road here. I think the Bengals will win but look for Dallas to cover.

Chicago (+10) over GREEN BAY: The Packers are 0-1 but I think they will be fine. The Bears are 1-0, but I see them coming back to pack very shortly. Look for the Packers to win on Sunday Night Football.

Tennessee (+10) over BUFFALO: The Bills will win the game in their home opener, but I think the Titans will cover the spread. Tennessee is in danger of falling to 0-2. I love that this game is an early Monday Night Football for the doubleheader.

Minnesota (+2) over PHILADELPHIA: The second half of the MNF doubleheader features the 1-0 Eagles and the 1-0 Vikings. I think this will be a very good game. I think the Vikings pull out the win.

 KANSAS CITY (-3) over Chargers

Broncos Lose Sloppy Opener 17-16 in Seattle

The Broncos started the Nathaniel Hackett and Russell Wilson era off on the wrong foot as they were defeated by the Seattle Seahawks 17-16 in Week 1 on Monday Night Football. The Broncos came in as favorites on the road and many expected Wilson to carve up his former team, but that was not the case. It was a disappointing way to start the season. Here are my thoughts on the game....

1) The Broncos defense was really bad in the first half. There was miscommunication, guys out of position, and poor tackling. They made Geno Smith look like a star. They gave up 17 points and a ton of yards. They clamped down in the second half and played really well, but that first half was brutal.

2) This was such a sloppy game from the Broncos is so many areas. They committed so many penalties. False starts, delay of games, defensive holding, and late hits. It was really bad. This is an area that has to get cleaned up next week.

3) The big plays were Melvin Gordon's fumble on the goal line in the third quarter, and Javonte Williams fumble on the 1 yard line the next possession of the third quarter. Those were killers. It was 17-13 Seattle at the time and it could have been at least 20-17.

4) Russell Wilson played well. He missed some throws but overall he moved the ball consistently and got into a groove in the second half. I think he will be fine going forward.

5) The Broncos offense had some really nice play designs and schemes. They kept Seattle off balance a lot and moved the ball all night long.

6) Nathaniel Hackett did not have the best game in his debut as a head coach. The plays were coming in late, there were some suspect play-calling decisions, and his game management at the end was really awful. He had all three timeouts and never used them and settled for a 64 yard field goal attempt by Brandon McManus instead of letting Wilson go for it on 4th and 5. Just awful. Why not put the game in Wilson's hands with it on the line and not on your kicker? Hopefully, Hackett learns from this and gets better as the season goes on because that was terrible.

7) I know everyone is going to overreact to this loss, and there is a lot of football left to go in the season. I think Wilson and the Broncos will be fine, but this was a game you had penciled in as a win for Denver, and they should have won the game and gave it away. That's a bad loss. I hope it doesn't come back to bite them because we know how brutal their divisional games will be the rest of the year.

8) The Broncos come back home to face the Texans in Denver next Sunday, so hopefully they can get back on track and get to 1-1.

Broncos-Seahawks and Week 1 Picks

The Broncos open up on the road in Seattle on Monday Night Football with new QB Russell Wilson going back to the Pacific Northwest to take on his old team right out of the gate. This has a setup for a tough game for the Broncos, and I think it will be for a little bit. Then, I think Wilson and the Broncos offense will take over, and then I see the Broncos defense feasting on Geno Smith late in the game to pull away. Denver has to win this game. They can't go out there and get beat in Wilson's return to Seattle.

Prediction: Denver (-4) over SEATTLE

Final Score: Broncos-24 Seahawks-17

Here we go with the picks for Week 1....

(HOME TEAM IN CAPS)

New Orleans (-4) over ATLANTA: A lot of people like the Saints this year, and I think they can be pretty good. I think Atlanta will have a rough season, and I think the Saints will take care of business on the road in Week 1.

San Francisco (-6) over CHICAGO: I thinks Chicago is in for a long, long year and it won't start easy in Week 1. If the Niners get their QB situation correct and either Trey Lance or Jimmy G solidify the spot, then they will have a big season. Look for them to get off to a good start with a win in Chicago.

CINCINNATI (-6) over Pittsburgh: I like what the Bengals have done in the offseason, and I don't think there will be a Super Bowl runner-up hangover for them this year. I think they jump on the Steelers and Mitch Trubisky early in Week 1 and ride to an easy victory.

DETROIT (+4) over Philadelphia: This could be a fun game in Week 1, and I think the Lions will surprise some people throughout the year. I think the Eagles will be a good team as well, so I actually think this game in very watchable. Look for the Lions to keep it close.

MIAMI (-2) over New England: The Dolphins usually play the Pats tough in recent years, and the Pats don't have a lot of "juice" on offense heading into this season. Miami made the big splash getting Tyreek Hill from KC, so I think they will come out of the gate and play well-at least early on.

Baltimore (-6) over NY JETS: It looks like it will be Joe Flacco against his old team in Week 1. I think the Ravens will be really good this year, and I expect a big year out of Lamar Jackson. Look the Ravens to win easily on the road in the Meadowlands.

Jacksonville (+3) over WASHINGTON: The Jaguars have a chance to be a very improved team in 2022. I would expect them to come out and jump all over the Commanders and start off 1-0.v

CAROLINA (-2) over Cleveland: Baker Mayfield gets a chance at revenge against Browns after they traded him this offseason. With DeShaun Watson on suspension, the Browns will start Jacoby Brissett. I think Mayfield and Carolina whip up on the Browns in this spot.

HOUSTON (+8) over Indianapolis: Week 1 always has some surprising outcomes, and I could see the Texans playing well at home as an underdog. I think the Colts are a playoff team, but I could see them getting upset this week.

NY Giants (+6) over TENNESSEE: I think the Titans will win, but look for the Giants to keep this game close. I don't love the Titans this season, and I think they will struggle this year.

MINNESOTA (+1) over Green Bay: I really like Minnesota this year, and I am actually picking them to win the division. I think they will pull the upset over Green Bay at home in Week 1. The Packers will be fine, but I see them having trouble out of the gate adjusting to their new weapons around Aaron Rodgers.

Kansas City (-4) over ARIZONA: I'm going against Pat Mahomes until I see it. I think KC will be really good this year again-even without Tyreek Hill. Look for the Chiefs to get off to a good start on the road in Arizona.

LA CHARGERS (-3) over Las Vegas: I'm picking the Chargers to win the AFC West, and I think Justin Herbert might even win the MVP this year. Look for them to take down the Raiders in a crucial Week 1 AFC West matchup.

DALLAS (+2) over Tampa Bay: I like this opener for Sunday Night Football. I like Dallas as a home underdog in this spot. I'm a little worried about the Bucs start to the season with the weird offseason they endured that included a Tom Brady retirement then un-retirement situation.

Bills-Rams Thursday Night Opener Pick!

This is another loaded Thursday Night Kickoff opener for the NFL right out of the gate. Week 1 and the 2022 season kicks off with the Bills traveling to LA to take on the Rams. The defending champs are the slight underdog, and I'll take them here in this spot.

LA RAMS (+2.5) over Buffalo
