Super Bowl 50 Daily Blog-Sunday January 31st

I'm trying something different now that the Broncos are in their second Super Bowl in three years. After the debacle in Super Bowl XLVIII, I figured there has to be a different way to chronicle Super Bowl week. Why not go with a daily blog of thoughts and random observations as the week goes on. I'll finish the week with a Super Bowl 50 preview and game prediction for Sunday, but in the lead up to the game, I'll document my thoughts each day as the hype for the game builds up. Here is the first entry..................

Sunday January 31st:
The Broncos and Panthers arrived in Santa Clara for Super Bowl 50 today. The Broncos seemed relaxed as they got off their plane and headed to their airport. In all of the pictures and video it seems like Peyton Manning is relaxed and really taking all of this in. There is a lot of talk about how this will most likely be Manning's last ever game. He hasn't talked about it publicly, but the word on the street is that it will be it for Manning after the Super Bowl. He seems like he is trying to soak it all in.

The Panthers arrived and the story was the outfit of Cam Newton. He was wearing some sort of zebra printed pants outfit, and it just draws more attention to him. He arrives at the Super Bowl on the heels of making comments about how he is an African-American QB and that scares people. Aren't we past the whole black quarterback thing? I mean Doug Williams won the Super Bowl MVP for the Redskins all the way back in 1988. I don't think it is an issue, but Newton is a lighting-rod and it will be interesting how he handles the media this week. Right now, the main focus of the Super Bowl is Cam and Peyton. We will see how that plays out the rest of the week.

The consensus at this point is that the Panthers are going to roll over the Broncos. The line started at 3.5 in favor of Carolina and it has risen to 6 in most sports books. Everyone seems to think that the Panthers and Cam Newton will be too much for Denver, and a lot of people are predicting a blowout win. I was at Home Depot with my youngest son this morning, and a guy on line next to me noticed we were wearing our Broncos gear, and he was telling me that he just hopes it is a close game because he fears that it will get ugly like it did two years ago when Seattle manhandled Denver 43-8 at Metlife Stadium. At this point, that is the feeling of everyone who follows the NFL. Everyone seems to think that the Panthers are going to win the game-it is a matter of how large the outcome gets. We'll see. I'm a lot more confident in the Broncos chances to win this game and not because I'm a Broncos fan. Perhaps the general public will begin to change their opinion as the week goes on, but make no mistake, the Broncos are being disregarded heavily at the beginning of this Super Bowl week.

Broncos Upset Patriots 20-18 to Win AFC Championship, Punch Ticket to Super Bowl 50!

Wow! That was one word I used to immediately describe Sunday's AFC Championship Game. In a game that was billed as a battle between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, it was an old-school defensive battle, and the Broncos defense shut the door when they needed to do it, and the Broncos upset the Patriots 20-18 to win the AFC Championship and head to Super Bowl 50. I almost collapsed from anxiety, excitement, exasperation, and exhaustion-mainly from an insanely tense 4th quarter-as the game ended and Shiloh Keo recovered the onside kick attempt to officially clinch the game with 12 seconds left. It was a great game, and a game that will long be remembered for Broncos fans as the day that the Broncos new "Orange Crush" defense dominated Brady and the dynamic Patriots offense. The Pats came in as heavy favorites, and no one was picking Denver, but the Broncos set the tone early by forcing an early punt, and Manning led a touchdown drive capped off by a 21 yard touchdown pass to Owen Daniels to give the Broncos a 7-0 lead that they never relinquished. The Broncos defense just harassed and hurried Brady all game long. They knocked him down 23 times, sacked him 4 times, and picked him off twice. It was a legendary performance by a unit that has carried the Broncos the entire year. It was only fitting that Denver's defense stopped the Patriots two-point attempt with only 12 seconds left to preserve the victory. It was the way that the Broncos won all year, and they did it once again. The Broncos knock off the Patriots and win their 8th AFC Championship and they will head to the Super Bowl for the 8th Super Bowl in franchise history, and it will be their second Super Bowl appearance in three seasons. There is so much to get to in this game, so here are my thoughts and observations on what will go down as one of the biggest wins in Broncos franchise history.......

1) The game started the way that you would love if you were a Broncos fan. They force a quick punt by the Patriots and they hurried Brady enough that he was forced to throw the ball early, and it fell incomplete over the middle. The Broncos took over on their own 17 yard line and they proceeded to go 83 yards on the first drive. The drive even featured a Manning bootleg pass to Andre Caldwell for a big first down. Manning found Owen Daniels on a 21 yard touchdown up the seam to give the Broncos a 7-0 lead with 7:32 left in the first quarter. It was a great double move by Daniels and an easy pitch and catch from Manning. It really set the tone of the game that the Broncos were here to play, and this was not going to be a blowout. I really thought that this was the tone-setter for the entire game.

2) The Broncos followed it up by forcing two more punts by the Brady and the Pats offense. One drive was stalled by a Derek Wolfe sack, and the other drive was stopped by a inaccurate throw to Rob Gronkowski. The Broncos defense was the story throughout the game, and they certainly started the way you would have hoped.

3) The Broncos made their lone mistake on offense when a swing pass by Manning to Ronnie Hillman fell incomplete, but it traveled backwards and Hillman never went after it, so the play was actually a lateral. The Patriots jumped on it right away, but the whistle blew the play dead as an incomplete pass. Bill Belichick smartly challenged it and the Pats won the challenge setting them up deep in Denver territory. Of course, they converted it into points as Steven Jackson rumbled in from 1 yard out to make it 7-6 Denver. It was really unfortunate because the Broncos had really dominated the first quarter and now with 1:49 left in the quarter and the game was about to be tied.

4) I was joking about how it would be great if somehow Stephen Gostkowski can miss the extra point and almost on cue, he pushed it right. He hasn't missed an extra point since his rookie year. It was just unbelievable. Now, the Broncos had a 7-6 lead, and it just felt like that was going to be a factor. Missed extra points always seem to come back and haunt teams, and it did play a role later on.

5) After a Broncos punt pinned the Patriots back in their own end, the Broncos defense made another big play early in the game. Von Miller fooled Tom Brady by dropping back into coverage and picked off Brady and the Broncos set up shop at the New England 16. It was a great deceptive play by the Broncos defense and coordinator Wade Phillips. We will get to Phillips and his game plan later on, but it was a great play and it once again showed that the Broncos defense was here to play.

6) Manning made the Pats pay with a really great throw to Owen Daniels in the corner of the end zone for a 12 yard touchdown pass to make it 14-6. It was another double move by Daniels and Manning made a really great throw and put it in the perfect place to take advantage of the turnover. I really felt at this point that Manning was playing well and with Denver up 14-6 with the way the defense was playing that the Broncos were in total control of the game. I knew Brady and the Pats weren't done, but I really felt like the Broncos were on the cusp on actually winning this game.

7) From that point, the two teams really slogged through the rest of the first half and the third quarter. The Patriots answered that Broncos touchdown with a field goal to cut it to 14-9. After a three and out by Denver, the Broncos defense made another big play. This time with the Pats moving the ball a bit, Malik Jackson rushed another Brady throw and he got picked off by Darian Stewart down the sideline. It was a great play by Stewart, who played a hell of a game, and once again Brady looked frazzled and rattled.

8) After another Broncos punt, the Patriots got conservative in their own end. With 2:26 left in the half, they ran the ball on a 3rd and 13 from their own 9, and Denver snuffed it out and called a timeout with 1:52 left to get the ball back. The Pats ran the ball twice in those three plays, and had a false start. I thought they should have been more aggressive, but they were clearly worried about the Broncos defense so they played it safe.

9) The Broncos moved it only 23 yards but it set up a Brandon McManus 52 yard field goal and a 17-12 lead right before the half. That was a very important sequence right before the half.

10) The next three Denver possessions in the third quarter produced three punts. The Pats two possessions during that span all resulted in punts as well. The first drive was stalled by a huge Von Miller sack on a first down play deep in NE territory, and the second drive was stopped by another Miller sack on a 3rd and 10. Von Miller was just amazing all game long. He was the MVP of this game by a wide margin.

11) As the fourth quarter started, the Broncos were able to move the ball just enough to get a crucial field goal. C.J. Anderson broke a 30 yard run on a 3rd and 1 from the Denver 48 down to the NE 22. Manning just missed an open Jordan Norwood in the endzone that would have made it 24-12, but the pass was just a little too much out of reach. If Denver scores there to make it 24-12, then I thought the game was going to be over with the way the Broncos defense was playing. Denver settled for the 31 yard field goal to make it 20-12 with 10:02 left in the game. From there, this game went into the epic zone. The following 10 minutes were one of the most gut-wrenching finale that I have ever witnessed as a Broncos fan.

12) You knew the Patriots had a drive left in them, and the Broncos were without both safeties because T.J. Ward and Darian Stewart left with injuries, and they were starting to get gassed. Brady had enough time to hit Julian Edelman for a huge 3rd and 10 down to the Denver 26 with 8 minutes to go. A 10 yard catch and run to Danny Amendola set up a 4th and 1 at the Denver 16. Belichick went for it, and I can't fault him for that, but Denver was all over the play-action throwback and Ware was basically on top of Brady when he turned to throw and Chris Harris and Aqib Talib swallowed up Edelman for a loss of 1 and a huge stop with 6:03 to go.

13) After another Broncos 3 and out, the Pats got the ball back with 4:35 to go at their own 29. After a quick first down, Brady threw a bullet to Gronk for a 28 yard gain down to the Denver 28. After a false start on a 3rd and 1, pushed it back to 3rd and 6, Amendola dropped a pass over the middle in traffic, and credit Kayvon Webster for stripping it out. On 4th and 6 from the Denver 14, the Broncos pass rush collapsed on Brady and all Brady could do was heave a prayer in the endzone for Gronk who was tripled covered and Talib knocked it away with only 2:25 seconds left.

14) The Broncos ran the ball twice for two yards, and NE called two timeouts right away. On 3rd down the Broncos went for the win and the first down but Manning's pass down the sideline to Emmanuel Sanders was incomplete and Denver had to punt. I have no problem with Gary Kubiak throwing the ball there because if they get it, the game is pretty much put away.

15) The Pats get the ball back with 1:52 left at the 50 with 1 timeout left. Three straight incompletions set up a 4th and 10 with 1:34 left in the game. With the game on the line, Brady hit Gronk on a seam pass with two Bronco defenders all over him. It was an incredible throw and an incredible catch by Gronk for 40 yards and set the Pats up with a 1st and goal at the Denvert 10. I almost collapsed when they play happened. At that point, I thought this game was going to overtime. I really did.

16) Three plays later, it set up a 4th and goal with 17 seconds left. Once again with the season on the line, Brady was harassed and just threw a pass up for grabs to Gronk in the endzone. With two Broncos around him once again, Gronk found a way to get open and jump up and catch the ball in the endzone for the touchdown to make it 20-18. It was an incredible play by Gronk, and it reminded me a little of how Jacoby Jones broke our hearts in the 2012 playoff game against the Ravens. I was just in shock at that point.

17) On the two-point try, the Broncos defense once again collapsed on Brady who had to roll right and then try to throw back across his body. The ball was tipped by Talib, who was all over Edelman, and Bradley Roby was right there to pick it off and hold the Broncos lead at 20-18. I had a feeling that Denver's defense might make a play there and even though Roby returned it and fumbled, it didn't matter because it was a conversion attempt, and the Broncos were an onside kick recovery away of winning the game and going to the Super Bowl. The Broncos defense made the play once again when they had to, and give credit to the defense for gathering themselves after giving up the touchdown to Gronk a play earlier. Just incredible sequence of events.

18) Shiloh Keo easily recovered the onside kick, and Peyton Manning took a knee and the Broncos were AFC Champs and heading to the Super Bowl! What a moment for the Broncos.

19) This game will be long remembered for the performance by the Broncos defense. Von Miller had one of the most dominant games I have ever seen in the NFL by a defensive player. He had 2.5 sacks, 1 interception, and about a million hurries. He was literally unblockable. He was just incredible all game long. Demarcus Ware was awesome as well. He got credited with a 1/2 sack, but was constantly in the backfield after Brady all game long. Malik Jackson was sensational and so was Derek Wolfe. The Broncos were able to get to Brady rushing those four guys and it just rattled and dismantled Brady and the Pats offense the entire game. Even when they didn't get a sack, they had Brady by the legs or had him sensing pressure.  They knocked Brady down 23 times, which was the most since 2006. They didn't let up. Their performance in this game was truly remarkable. Give credit to Brandon Marshall and Danny Trevathan who played well in coverage for most of the game. The secondary was great. Talib had his best game of the season, Chris Harris played great with a bum shoulder, and Bradley Roby made plays as well. Darian Stewart had a pick and he punished the Pats receivers with 2 huge hits. T.J. Ward was great as well. That was the best performance I have ever seen by a Broncos defense in my lifetime.

20) Wade Phillips put together one of the best gameplans I have seen in a long time. He completely outcoached Belichick and Josh McDaniels. He stayed away from the blitz and knew he could get to Brady with just his four man rush and it worked. He fooled Brady at times, and he stayed with his gameplan and it was just a great coaching performance. He was the best offseason move the Broncos made when Kubiak brought him along in the offseason.

21) The missed extra point by Gostkowski was such a huge play. You knew that miss would play a role at some point and it did. By the way, Bill Belichick was one of the driving forces to get the extra point moved back, and it actually came back to bite him and his team.

22) All week long, I really thought it was going to be a tall order for the Broncos to pull this off. I had a bad feeling that Brady with a healthy Gronk and Edelman were going to carve up the Broncos underneath and win the game. As the week wore on, I started to get a little chippy because I felt like no one was giving the Broncos defense a lot of credit. This was the best defense in the league by a wide margin, and it was basically given no chance at stopping the Pats. Great defenses usually beat great offenses, and I just had a feeling by Sunday morning that the Broncos defense was going to play well. Plus, they were at home. If this game was in New England, then it is a different story, but the Mile High crowd is one of the best in the NFL, so you had to think that was a factor. On Sunday morning, everyone on NFL Network, ESPN, and CBS picked the Patriots, so I just loved the fact that the Broncos were big underdogs. I wasn't really nervous when the game started because Denver wasn't supposed to win the game. I had feeling by kickoff that they were going to play well. Once the game started and Denver grabbed the early lead, I had a feeling this was going to be a close game, and it was. There is nothing better when you root for a team, and everyone is doubting them and they come out on top. It was like that in Super Bowl XXXII when the Broncos upset the Packers, and it happened once again Sunday in the AFC Championship. It really is an incredible feeling as a fan.

23) Peyton Manning gets to go to one more Super Bowl in what looks like his final season. He wasn't great (17-32 for 176 yards 2 TDs and 0 INT), but his two TD passes to Daniels in the first half were huge plays, and he didn't turn the ball over, and he managed the game against a very tough Patriots defense. In a year that really didn't go his way, it was special to see him get a chance to beat Tom Brady once again and head to Super Bowl 50. Manning is now 3-1 against Brady in AFC Championship Game. It was really fitting for him to beat Brady in what probably will be the last ever Brady-Manning game. He is headed to his fourth Super Bowl, and he heads to his second one in three years. I am so happy for Manning, and it gives him one last chance to win his second Super Bowl and ride off into the sunset with another Lombardi Trophy.

24) Gary Kubiak came back to Denver in a very tough situation. After John Fox and John Elway decided to "part ways" after last year's disappointing playoff loss to the Colts, Kubiak had to take over a team with an aging Hall of Fame QB, and a team that had to win now-not five years from now. Anything less than a big-time season, and he would be criticized. He handled the team very well, navigated through the Manning injury, and he kept the team on course. He really didn't get enough credit for the job that he did this season in a very tough situation.

24) The Broncos head to their 8th Super Bowl in franchise history. It ties them with the Steelers, Patriots and Cowboys for most appearances in the Super Bowl. They are now 8-3 in AFC Championship Games, and they have a chance to erase the memory of the disaster they suffered in Super Bowl XLVIII. Give credit to John Elway. In his five years as GM/Executive VP he has led the Broncos to five straight playoff appearances, two AFC titles, and two Super Bowl appearances. Elway has been just a godsend from where this franchise was when he took it over in 2011.

25) There is a lot of time to talk about the matchup with Carolina in Super Bowl 50. The Panthers dismantled the Cardinals 49-15 in the NFC Championship, and they are 4 1/2 point favorites to win the Super Bowl. I'll take a look at that game over the next two weeks, but for now I will sit back and enjoy this victory and soak it in for two weeks as the Broncos are headed back to another Super Bowl. Go Broncos!

Broncos-Patriots AFC Championship Game Preview and Prediction!

The 2015 AFC Championship Game features the Denver Broncos hosting the New England Patriots in what looks like the final installment of the Tom Brady and Peyton Manning rivalry. It had to come down to this. There is no other way for it to happen. Manning vs. Brady with the Super Bowl on the line. The Broncos are making their 10th AFC Championship Game appearance (I am lucky to witness 9 of these in my life), and they are looking to win the AFC for the second time in three years. Two years ago, Denver dominated the Patriots en route to a 26-16 victory. This time around, the game is back in Denver once again, but it is a very different Patriots team that is coming to Mile High. This game is going to be very tough for Denver to win, and as the week went on, I tried to come up with different scenarios in my mind that would make me feel more confident, but I am having trouble doing that. Trust me, it isn't me being too cautious or trying to use reverse psychology. Before I get to my preview and prediction of the game, I just want to say that I am really trying to soak up the Broncos being in the AFC Championship. This the Broncos second time in the AFC Title game in three years. It is the third AFC Championship since 2005. It is very rare and special to make it this far if you are rooting for your favorite team, so I feel like it is important to try and enjoy and appreciate this as much as I can. You don't know when your team is going to get back to this spot, and especially with the end of Peyton Manning's career and run in Denver on the horizon, I have to try to be mindful of just how special it is to be in this spot. With that said here is why this game scares me so much, and why I think it will be a surprise if Denver wins....

1) Tom Brady is playing at a high level. He has played as good as he has this season, and it will be very tough to derail him on Sunday. Forget about the 2-6 record in Denver, we know how good he is, and I have a tough time seeing Denver's defense stopping him. He almost beat Denver singlehandedly in Denver during the regular season on that Sunday night, and he basically had no weapons left after Gronk got hurt. He is 3-0 in the playoffs against #1 defenses historically

2) The return of Julian Edelman and Rob Gronkowski pose the biggest threat to the Broncos and their defense. Watching the two of them last week in the Divisional win over KC just reminded you of how lethal these two are. The Broncos really didn't stop Gronk in their regular season matchup, and Edelman has really killed Denver when he has played them the last couple of years. I don't know how Denver is going to slow down these two. Throw in the fact that Chris Harris, who is the Broncos best player in the secondary, is banged up and not 100% with a shoulder injury, and the Gronk/Edelman duo really becomes problematic.

3) We know how good Bill Belichick is in these big games, but the entire Pats coaching staff usually brings their "A" game into these contests. I can see Belichick and DC Matt Patricia frustrating the hell out of Peyton Manning. I could also see OC Josh McDaniels outsmarting Wade Phillips. The coaching staff of New England gives them an edge in this game.

4) The New England defense isn't as soft as some people think. Rob Ninkovich always plays well against the Broncos, and Chandler Jones was great against them in the regular season. I think they matchup well with Denver in the secondary, and for this game they are healthy on defense with Jamie Collins and Donta Hightower playing in the game. I don't see Denver running all over them, and they can cover well, so how can Denver manufacture enough points to win this game?

5) I have a hard time believing that the Broncos are going to be able to beat the Patriots once in the regular season and then in the postseason. It happened in 2006 with the Colts, 2010 with the Jets, and 2012 with the Ravens. The way that first game played out in Denver, I just don't see the Patriots coming to Mile High and losing twice to this team.

6) If you didn't follow football all year long, and then decided to watch the Divisional Playoffs, then there is no way you wouldn't think that the Patriots are the better team. The truth is that the Pats are the better team, and I just think there is no way around it. I feel like the Broncos are about to walk into a buzzsaw on Sunday. It turns the tables on what it was like for New England when they came into Denver two years ago, and the Broncos were clearly the better team and proved it.

7) The final part that scares me is the fact that Belichick and Brady have always had the upperhand on Peyton Manning in this rivalry. They have gotten the best of him more than he has gotten the best of them. In what could be Manning's final game ever, doesn't it just seem like Brady and Belichick will be the ones to put him away for good? It doesn't seem fair, but it has been that way the whole rivalry, so why would it happen any other way.

All is not totally hopeless for the Broncos. There are some reasons why you can make a case that the Broncos will pull the upset on Sunday. Here is what could be in their favor...

1) The Broncos do have homefield advantage. As a result of their win over the Pats in November in Mile High, the Broncos get to host the AFC Championship. They are 5-1 in AFC Title Games at home. It will certainly help them, and the crowd will be electric from the start.

2) As good as Tom Brady and that offense is for New England, the Broncos have the best defense in the NFL. They have rushers that could potentially get to Brady with Von Miller, Demarcus Ware (He missed the first game between the two teams), Derek Wolfe, and Malik Jackson. They have a secondary that can cover multiple receiving options, and they have a front seven that can stop the run. If anyone can slow down the Pats offense, Denver's defense has about as good of a shot to do it. Don't forget about the Broncos defense. Remember that.

3) The Broncos have won weird, close, and nerve-racking games all year long against good competition. If they are going to win this game, it will follow the same formula. If this game is slow and ugly, then the Broncos will be fine with that because that is the style they played all year long. Turnovers by the defense and timely plays by the offense helped them to get to 13 wins, and maybe it will work in their favor one more time. They got the big break all year, so maybe it is their year and they will get that break again on Sunday.

4) This looks like it could be the end of Peyton Manning's career. As tough of a season he had with the injuries and the poor play, he still finds himself in the AFC Championship Game with a chance to go to another Super Bowl. Maybe this is how it is supposed to end? Maybe he will get a chance to go back to the Super Bowl and ride off into the sunset. This looks like this is his last chance, so maybe destiny and fate on our his side this last time. Brady going to get more opportunities after this year, but this looks like the end for Peyton Manning. Maybe-just maybe- it is supposed to end with him going back to another Super Bowl and hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

Prediction: New England (-3) over DENVER: As much as I try to build a case for the Broncos, I just think that the Patriots are healthy and simply the better team at this point. If Peyton Manning were his vintage self, then I would call this game a toss up, but Manning isn't the same player, and the Broncos just won't have enough to keep pace with the Pats. I hate to say it, but I could see the Pats running away with this one early in the second half.

Final Score: Patriots-33 Broncos-17

NFC Championship Game Picks

Last Week's Record: 3-1
Overall Playoff Record: 6-2
Regular Season Record: 123-125-11

2-Arizona at 1-Carolina
(NFC Championship Game)

A Case for the Cardinals: Although they escaped win a dramatic win last week over Green Bay, and they were bombed at home in Week 17 by the Seahawks, the Cards are a very solid team that finished the regular season 13-3. Don't forget about that. Plus, after struggling last week, I would expect Bruce Arians to have Carson Palmer ready to go, and it would not surprise me to see Palmer play a really good game. If he does that, then the Cards will have a really good chance to win the game. Also, the Cardinals are not being picked by anyone to win this game. They will surely use that as motivation. I think they matchup better with the Panthers than a lot of people are giving them credit for.

A Case for the Panthers: After last week's thumping of the Seahawks, the Panthers proved they were the real deal in the NFC this year. As I said earlier in the playoffs, it just seems like it is the Panthers year. Cam Newton is going to be the NFL MVP, and you just have a feeling that this team's destiny is to be playing in Super Bowl 50. It will be very hard to convince me that they will blow this game at home. Even if this game gets close, you have to believe that Newton will find a way to will his team to another victory.

Prediction: CAROLINA(-3) over Arizona: I think this will be a close game, and it has the makings of a game that will come down to the wire. In any event, it is the Panthers year, so I see them gettong it done at home on Sunday night, and they will advance to their first Super Bowl appearance since Super Bowl XXXVIII.

Final Score: Panthers-28 Cardinals-17

Divsional Round Review!

The Divisional Round featured all the top seeds winning for the first time since 2004. All four games finished with one score games, and it featured one classic finish in Arizona. Here is my breakdown of the three games in sequential order....

New England-27 Kansas City-20

1) The Patriots came down and scored a touchdown on a Tom Brady to Rob Gronkowski 8-yard touchdown on the first drive, and you knew it was going to be the Patriots afternoon. This game never felt like it was going to go against the Pats.

2) The Pats offense looked really good once again with Julian Edelman back, and Brady wasn't even touched the entire game from the pocket. Edelman had a big day, and Gronk was great as usual, and as the Pats were scoring touchdowns, the Chiefs were kicking field goals.

3) It was 14-6 when Brady hit Gronk for another touchdown to make it 21-6. At that point, I really thought the game was over. I never felt like the game was in danger for the Pats, and after that score, it was over in my opinion.

4) The Chiefs held on for long enough and they were down 27-13 and driving when Andy Reid went back to his bag of tricks. Alex Smith, who played gutty all game long, completed a pass down to the 1-yard line with 2:57 left, and the Chiefs had three timeouts left and ran one play there before the two-minute warning. Of course, the Chiefs ran a run play that was stopped for no gain. Then, they threw a pass that was complete after a false start, the clock was still running, and the Chiefs didn't call a timeout once again. They finally scored with only 1:13 left, and they still had three timeouts left! The Chiefs then went for an onside kick, it was recovered by the Pats, and New England was able to get a first down off a deflection to secure the win. Andy Reid is a good coach and he has done a nice job with the Chiefs, but these game situations with him on the sideline are just awful. He makes you scratch your head at times, and it cost him once again.

Arizona-26 Green Bay-20 (OT)

1) This was the most memorable game of the weekend. This game will be remembered as the "Double Hail Mary" game which featured Aaron Rodgers completing another Hail Mary to tie the game at 20 with no time left in regulation. We will get to that in a bit.

2) The game can be summed up pretty easily until the 4th quarter. Carson Palmer was pretty bad and struggled throwing two crucial interceptions. The Packers got their running game going again, and Aaron Rodgers was making some big plays with basically no receivers after Randall Cobb went down with a chest injury in the second quarter. He was throwing to Jeff Janis and Jarred Abberdaris for God's sake. They battled enough to take a 13-7 lead after Rodgers hit Janis midway through the third quarter to take a 13-7 lead. You had the feeling that the Packers were going to pull this one out.

3) The Cardinals took a 17-13 lead when the Palmer hit Michael Floyd with a 9-yard pass with 3:44 left in the game. From there, the Packers went for it on a 4th and 5 at their own 25 and 2:42 left. Rodgers one-hopped a pass to James Jones and looked like the Packers were done. The Packers only had one timeout left, and after a run by Arizona, the Packers had to burn their last timeout. The Cards and Bruce Arians called for a pass that was incomplete and gave Green Bay a much needed timeout. After an Arizona run, the Cards settled for a field goal and a 20-13 lead. I really have no problem with Arians being aggressive in that spot because if it is a complete pass, then the game is over. You can't fault being aggressive there in my opinion.

4) What happened next was about as remarkable as you can get in a game. The Packers got the ball with no timeouts and 1:50 left from their own 14. Rodgers hits a 4th and 20 bomb to Janis for a gain of 60 in his first Hail Mary attempt to keep their hopes alive. Instead, of spiking it, the Packers tried to run a play, and the play was incomplete and the Packers had a penalty in there as well for illegal motion. With 4 seconds left, Rodgers drops back and hits Janis with a 41-yard bomb on his second Hail Mary of the game, and somehow they tie the game at 20 with no time left. It was unbelievable to watch, and I can't believe that Rodgers was able to complete that pass. Janis caught the ball with two Cardinals, including Patrick Peterson, covering him. It was a surreal moment.

5) On the first play of overtime, Palmer scrambled around and somehow found Larry Fitzgerald all the way across the field, and Fitz caught it and broke free and got down to the 5 yard line for a 75 yard gain. Two plays later, Palmer ran a shovel pass and Fitzgerald caught it and won the game on a 5-yard pass and the Cards advance 26-20 in overtime.

6) This game will be remembered for Aaron Rodgers amazing Hail Mary throws. Forget about what Arizona did in overtime won't be remembered. It is kind of a shame that Rodgers and the Packers lost, and Arizona really was lucky to advance but they are headed to their first NFC Championship Game since 2008.

Carolina-31 Seattle-24

1) I thought this was the least exciting game of the weekend, and I was surprised because I thought this had the potential to be the best game of the weekend. This game can be summed up on the first two series of the game. Jonathan Stewart broke a huge run on the first play of the game for 59 yards, and they scored a few plays later to take a 7-0 lead. On Seattle's first series, Marshawn Lynch got crushed on first down, and then Russell Wilson got picked off by Luke Kuechly and returned for a 14 yard touchdown and the Panthers were up 14-0 with only 11:38 left in the first quarter. What a way for the game to start for the Panthers.

2) This game was 31-0 at the half, and the Panthers really took the foot off the gas pedal after they had that big lead. I know the Seahawks clawed their way back and cut the lead to 31-24 to make it a little interesting, but the game was over in the first half. The Panthers were just looking to get the hell out of there with the win and no injuries. I know that the Seahawks actually had an onside kick attempt, and the Panthers recovered and ran out the clock, but this game was never in doubt.

3) Give the Panthers credit. They went 15-1 this year, and they drew the Seahawks in their first playoff game and they came out and crushed Seattle and put a 31-0 lead at the half. I thought the Panthers were going to win, and my feeling was that the Seahawks would be gassed having to come across the country for the second straight week and they had to play another early game on Sunday after doing it last week in Minnesota. My gut was right because Carolina punched Seattle in the mouth from the very first play and never looked back. Carolina gets back to the NFC Championship for the first time since 2005, and you have to think that they are the favorites to win Super Bowl 50 at this point.

Broncos Grind Out Victory Over Steelers-Advance to AFC Championship Game

The Broncos were a touchdown favorite heading into the AFC Divisional Playoff game against the wounded, beat-up Pittsburgh Steelers. Antonio Brown was out with a concussion, DeAngelo Williams was out with an ankle injury, and Ben Roethlisberger was playing with partially separated shoulder. All the experts were pointing to an easy Broncos win at home with the returning Peyton Manning. If you watched the Broncos all year, they have played low-scoring, tight, close games with their defense carrying the day. Why would you expect anything different in this playoff game? The Broncos grinded out another tough, close game at home 23-16 to advance to the AFC Championship Game next Sunday against the hated Patriots. Yes, it will be another Tom Brady-Peyton Manning matchup. Before we get to that, the Broncos took care of their part with the win over the Steelers. It wasn't easy. There were times that looked a little bleak for the Broncos, but like they did all year long, they fought, clawed and found a way to take the lead late and have their defense hold off Big Ben and the Steelers at the end of the game. It wasn't the prettiest game, but the Broncos did it that way all year, and that is how they advanced to host the AFC Title Game next week. Here are my thoughts and observations on the game....

1) You can't ask for a better start from the Broncos perspective. They forced a quick three and out for Pittsburgh, got a nice return by Omar Bolden on the punt return. Unfortunately, the Broncos settled for a field goal after only getting one first down, and it was 3-0. The next series, the Steelers drove the ball down to the Broncos 32, and on a 4th and 1 play, Pittsburgh went for it and Aqib Talib broke up the pass intended for Markus Wheaton and Denver took over on downs.

2) After the teams exchanged punts, the Broncos again took over in good field position, but once again they had to settle for another field goal by Brandon McManus, and the Broncos only lead 6-0. Settling for field goals on those drives was unfortunate because the Broncos should have had a bigger lead.

3) The Steelers settled in, and they hit a couple of big plays on the next drive including an end-around to Martavis Bryant and a Fitzgerald Toissaint touchdown run gave them a 7-6 late in the first quarter. So, after all that momentum to start the game, Denver was now trailing by a point.

4) The Broncos have been plagued by drops all year long, and once again it hurt them again in this game. With the Broncos driving on the next series, Manning just missed Demaryius Thomas on a deep post, and Emmanuel Sanders dropped a 3rd down pass that would have put them in field goal range.

5) The Steelers got the ball back and Big Ben hit a wide-open Darrius Heyward-Bey on a 58 yard hookup on a blown coverage and it set up a field goal and a 10-6 lead for Pittsburgh.

6) The Broncos once again moved the ball, but the drops really started getting out of hand. A dropped pass by C.J. Anderson on a third down killed one drive. Anderson had a lot of room to run too, and if he catches that pass, then the Broncos are in business. The next drive started in good field possession but Bennie Fowler dropped one pass, and Emmanuel Sanders dropped a pass on a 4th and 3 play from the Steelers 37 yard line. Sanders would have had a first down at the Pitt 25. Just bad play by the receivers once again.

7) The Steelers got too cute on a 3rd and 2 the next series when they tried another end around with Bryant and the Broncos snuffed it out for no gain. Denver started at their own five, and C.J. Anderson busted it for a 35 yard gain and the Broncos were on the move once again. Manning drilled a 3rd and 3 pass to Thomas for a first down. The drive stalled, but it set up another McManus field goal from 51 yards and it made the score 10-9.

8) After a Broncos punt to start the third quarter, Big Ben hit Bryant for another big play on a 50 yard catch and run, but Denver's defense stiffened like they always do and escaped by only giving up a field goal and Pittsburgh had a 13-9 lead. Talib broke up another pass in the end zone to Bryant to force the field goal. Talib was solid all game long.

9) After a brilliant punt by Britton Colquitt, who had his best punting day in a long time, the Broncos pinned the Steelers back and forced a quick three and out to get the ball back. Pittsburgh got really conservative in that spot, and the Broncos were moving the ball once again with a couple of Manning completions and an Anderson run. A sack on Manning derailed the drive and once again, McManus hit a 41 yarder to cut the lead to 13-12.

10) The Steelers were on the move once again, and as the 4th quarter started, it looked like Denver was in trouble. A key penalty on a first down by Pitt put them at 1st and 25 and after a 3rd and 30 gain of 10, Pittsburgh decided against a 52 yard field goal and punted, but the ball went into the end zone for a touchback. That is how tough the wind was in the game. In a normal game at Mile High, 52 yard field goals are never a question.

11) The next series featured one of the most bizarre sequences of the game. On first down, Manning was rushed, looked like he was giving himself up for a sack like he always does, wasn't touched, got up and delivered a strike to Sanders for 34 yards. After the drive stalled, the Broncos punted and Wheaton muffed it, and Pittsburgh recovered at the one-inch line and it almost looked like a safety. At the least, it should have been spotted at the one yard line, but it was ruled a touchback and somehow Pittsburgh avoided a disaster.

12) This is where the game turned. Big Ben had the Steelers on the move once again, and on a 2nd and 4 from the Broncos 34, Bradley Roby punched the ball out of Toussaint's hand and forced the fumble that was recovered by Demarcus Ware at the Broncos 35 yard line with 9:52 to go in the game. It was the first turnover in the game, and like they did all year long, the Broncos defense got a big turnover when they needed it. What a great play by Roby.

13) A big run by Anderson down to the Pitt 35 was negated by a holding call that was questionable at best. You thought that it just wasn't going to be the Broncos day. Give Peyton Manning credit because he made one of the best throws he made all year long. After getting nearly intercepted by William Gay on 2nd and 12, he hit Bennie Fowler on a 3rd and 12 with a bullet to give Denver a first down at the Pitt 36 yard line. It was one of the biggest plays of the game at that point. A couple of runs set up Denver with a quick throw to Sanders for a first down at the Steelers 15. Ronnie Hillman had two really nice runs to give the Broncos a 1st and Goal at the Pitt 2 yard line. Two runs put the ball at the Pittsburgh 1 yard line, and the Broncos hurried up, didn't huddle, and punched it in with Anderson going over for a 1 yard touchdown run and a 18-13 lead with only 3:00 minutes to play in the game. I was nervous about the hurry up, but it worked out as it didn't allow Pittsburgh to get ready for the play. Denver went for 2, and I loved the 2-point play. They took a timeout to set it up. They stacked the receivers to the right in a bunch formation, and Manning threw a quick pass to Demaryius Thomas, who walked into the endzone and a very critical 20-13 lead.

14) Three minutes to go with the Steelers at their own 20, and Big Ben taking the field to try and tie the game. You knew it was going to come down to this as a Broncos fan. A big first down throw to Bryant put it at the 38 yard line, and then the Broncos defense stepped up once again. On a 3rd and 5 from the 43, Demarcus Ware forced a quick throw by Big Ben and an incompletion. On 4th and 5, Von Miller rushed Ben and forced him to step up and Ware cleaned it up for the huge sack. Ware and Miller saved their best pass rush of the entire game for the most critical point in the game.

15) Three straight runs by Denver set up a huge McManus with a 45 yard field goal to effectively put the game out of reach and give Denver a 23-13 lead with only 53 seconds left in the game.

16) From there, Pittsburgh drove down to get a quick field goal to make it 23-16, but Denver recovered the onside kick with only 19 seconds left, and a Manning kneeldown ended the game, and the Broncos were victorious 23-16 to advance to their 10th AFC Championship in franchise history.

17) Give Big Ben and the Steelers credit. Without their best receiver, starting running back, and a banged up shoulder, Roethlisberger was gutty, gritty, and played well enough to give his team a chance. No one should discount how admirable he played, and the Steelers as a group played their asses off and almost pulled off the upset.

18) The stories will be about Peyton Manning and his performance. It is clear that he is not the same player he was just over a year ago, but on a windy day, Manning played well enough to manage the game, didn't turn the ball over, and overcame some drops and adversity to make just enough throws and plays to win the game. He finished 22-37 for 222 yards and 0 TDs and 0 interceptions. He did what he had to do, and he did a nice job checking out of certain plays and played within himself to help his team win the game. On a day where they only converted 3-15 on third down conversions, he still produced 20 points, which was enough to get the job done.

19) As it was all year long, the defense made the plays to win the game. Outside of four big plays they gave up, they held the Steelers to only 200 yards of total offense, and they held the Steelers to 2-12 on third down. They got the turnover they needed late on the big play by Roby, and they got the sacks and pressure on the last two downs to preserve the victory. If you had to give game balls, I would give them to Von Miller, Demarcus Ware, Derek Wolfe, Aqib Talib, and of course Bradley Roby.

20) One of the underrated aspects of this game was the kicking of Brandon McManus. He made 5 field goals on a day where the wind was just gusting and wrecking havoc all game long. McManus' performance reminded me of Jason Elam's performance in the 1998 AFC Championship Game against the Jets.

21) This game was a microcosm of how the Broncos played all year long. It was tight, close, and the Broncos grinded out the victory. Forget about stats, this group likes to play in these ugly and sluggish games. Their offense and Manning did just enough at times, and their defense made the plays to win the game. I'm not going to worry about style points because winning a playoff game is hard to do in the NFL, and the 2015 Broncos came in as the #1 seed and did what they had to do: They beat the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers at home coming off the bye. Let's enjoy this one as Broncos fans. We are advancing to the AFC Championship for the second time in three years. I know that it will be a very tough game going up against the healthy Patriots, and the Broncos will be underdogs, but we will worry about that later in the week. There will be plenty of time to talk about another Tom Brady-Peyton Manning showdown later this week, and I'm going to enjoy this victory and celebrate the Broncos Divisional Playoff win over the Steelers. GO BRONCOS!!!!!

Broncos-Steelers Divisional Playoff Preview

Here we go. The Broncos run to Super Bowl 50 begins on Sunday with the Pittsburgh Steelers coming to Denver to take on the Broncos in the last game of the playoff weekend. At this point in the year, any team left in the NFL playoffs has a chance to get to the Super Bowl and win it. The Steelers are no different. This game scares the hell out of me. There are a lot of factors to consider when looking at this game from a Broncos fan perspective. Here are the things that scare me going into this game.....

1) It starts with Ben Roethlisberger. I know he has a sprained AC joint and a partially separated shoulder in his throwing as a result of a sack he took in the AFC Wild Card game at Cincy last week. The fact that he came back in and finished the game tells you all you need to know about Ben's availability this Sunday. He's playing. As long as Big Ben is out there, then he will be a factor. He can win this game on his own. He is just that good. He ripped the Broncos defense apart in Pittsburgh in Week 15, and he was the only QB to throw for over 300 yards this year on this Broncos defense. We have also seen Big Ben play very well through some really painful injuries, so I expect him to be at his best.

2) The Steelers offense has a lot of weapons and Antonio Brown completely torched Chris Harris in the first meeting. Harris has been our best CB for the past three years, and he was no match for Brown last month. He is only guy to really beat Harris at all this year. Brown is out of the game with a concussion, but the Steelers have Big Ben at the controls and they have other weapons. You have to worry about Martavis Bryant and Markus Wheaton ripping them apart, and someone like Heath Miller making plays as well.

3) I have no idea what to expect from Peyton Manning. In the first meeting with the Steelers, Manning was injured, so Brock Osweiler got the start. We know how that game went: Brock played really well in the first half, built a 27-10 lead, went ice cold in the second half, and the Broncos lost 34-27. I don't know what is going to happen with Manning starting this game. Are the Broncos going to run up tempo, no-huddle? Are they going to try to put Manning under center more and run the ball more? In the first matchup, the Broncos killed the Steelers by spreading them out and throwing the ball down the field in chunks. Can Manning even make those throws this week? The Peyton Manning question is the biggest factor in this game for the Broncos.

4) The Steelers seem to have nine lives. Think about it: They lost at Baltimore in Week 16 to a 4-10 Ravens team. They needed the Jets to lose to Buffalo and a win over Cleveland in Week 17 just to make the playoffs. They got the break they needed when the Jets lost, and they were on the verge of losing at Cincy last week until Jeremy Hill fumble and the Bengals melted down at the end. They looked like they were going to miss the playoffs entirely two weeks ago, and now they are here in the Divisional Playoffs. Perhaps they are on the verge of going on some magical run just like they did in 2005.

5) The injuries to Roethlisberger and Brown will be a major storyline heading into this game, but I think the Steelers will use that as motivation. They know they are heavy underdogs, they are beat up going into the game, and they will use that to get themselves to play fast and loose and with nothing to lose. That is always a dangerous combination when you are in the playoffs. God, this team scares me.

6) Next, the Broncos have played low-scoring, tight games the entire year. That is not going to change this week. Forget about the injury to Big Ben because you know he is playing. Forget about the fact that Antonio Brown is not playing. Forget about the fact that the Steelers are playing in their fourth straight road game dating back to Week 16. Forget about the fact that Denver is at home and coming off a bye with the #1 defense in the NFL. All that won't matter come kickoff on Sunday. This will be a close game no matter what. I expect it to be a very tough game for the Broncos to win.

7) Finally, maybe there is a revenge factor in play here for the Steelers. The last time these two played in a playoff game was the epic 2011 AFC Wild Card Game in Denver. Yes, the Tim Tebow to Demaryius Thomas OT game that ripped the heart out of the Steelers 29-23. I worry that karma might come back to bite the Broncos and the football Gods will give the Steelers one back in return for the Tebow game.

Prediction: Pittsburgh(+6) over DENVER: This line is way too high. I just think there are too many question marks surrounding Peyton Manning and his play. I don't care that Big Ben and Antonio Brown are banged up. I think the Steelers and Roethlisberger will do enough to go into Denver and take down the Broncos.

Final Score: Steelers-27 Broncos-17

2015 NFL Divisional Playoffs Picks!

The NFL Divisional Playoff round gets going this weekend, and if there was any doubt as to the impact of a big-time QB, then look at the eight QBs that are left in this round. Tom Brady, Peyton Manning, Ben Roethlisberger, Alex Smith, Aaron Rodgers, Russell Wilson, Cam Newton and Carson Palmer. Brady, Manning, Big Ben, Rodgers, and Wilson have all won at least 1 Super Bowl. Newton and Palmer have been two of the top three QBs in the entire NFL this year, and Alex Smith is a solid pro who had a Pro Bowl year. Gone are the likes of Kirk Cousins, Brian Hoyer, A.J. McCarron, and Teddy Bridgewater. It has come down to the NFL's version of the Elite Eight, and you have an elite set of QBs ready to make their move to Super Bowl 50. Here are the picks for Divisional Weekend.....

Last Week's Record: 3-1
Overall Playoff Record: 3-1
Regular Season Record: 123-125-11

5-Kansas City at 2-New England
AFC Divisional Playoff Game

A Case for the Chiefs: They have won 11 straight games heading into this one. They had an easy victory in Round 1 over the Texans. They have a really good defense that forces turnovers, and they have a very potent pass rush that could give the Patriots and their offensive line fits. They got the playoff monkey off their backs last week with their first playoff win since 1993. The pressure is on the Patriots, so the Chiefs can play fast and loose and play with that underdog mentality. They are the hottest team in the league, and a team that no one wants to see at this point of the playoffs, and maybe they have a little bit of destiny's darlings in them.

A Case for the Patriots: They are getting their banged-up players back just in time for this game. Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola, and Rob Gronkowski are all healthy and ready. On defense, they are getting Donta Hightower and Jamie Collins back healthy. Jeremy Maclin is questionable for this game with a high ankle injury, so the Pats will double Travis Kelce and take him out of the game. By the way, they have Tom Brady and Bill Belichick going up against Alex Smith and Andy Reid. That certainly goes in their favor. Plus, all we have heard about the last few weeks is how they are limping and crawling into the playoffs, but the Pats have been just waiting for the playoffs, and they know they are getting healthy at the right time of the year.

Prediction: NEW ENGLAND (-5) over Kansas City: I would expect nothing but the Pats "A" game here in this spot. The Chiefs are not a pushover, but the Pats are ready and rested, and look for them to put a whipping on KC on Saturday afternoon.

Final Score: Patriots-30 Chiefs-17

5-Green Bay at 2-Arizona
NFC Divisional Playoff Game

A Case for the Packers: What you saw last week from the Packers in their victory over Washington was something we haven't seen from them since October. Can Aaron Rodgers and the Packers offense do it again this week? Why not. Green Bay doesn't matchup well with Arizona, but that isn't going to matter if Rodgers gets hot again. Plus, the Packers got destroyed by the Cardinals in Week 16 in that building, and now they can use that as motivation to play their tails off. No one will give them much of a chance this week, and that is a spot that the Packers are usually not in. It would be foolish to just right them off in this game. They have played too many playoff games in recent years, and you can never count out Rodgers having a massive day. Maybe, the Packers just waited for the playoffs to get going again?

A Case for the Cardinals: They have been one of the best 2-3 teams in the entire league all year long. They are significantly better than the Packers, they pounded them a few weeks ago, they are very well-coached under Bruce Arians, and Carson Palmer had a MVP season this year. On the surface, it will be very hard for anyone to go into Arizona and get a win over this Cardinals team. You have to like the matchup from a defensive standpoint with Arizona's defense going up against the banged up Packers offensive line. They are rested, they are the better team, and there is no reason why they can't take care of business and get to the NFC Championship.

Prediction: Green Bay (+7) over ARIZONA: This game really intrigues me on Saturday night. You have Aaron Rodgers as an underdog heading to Arizona in a playoff game. I think this game will be closer than the debacle that happened in Week 16. I think Rodgers makes enough plays to keep the Packers in the game, and although I see a close Cardinals victory, it wouldn't shock me if Green Bay pulled off the upset.

Final Score: Cardinals-27 Packers-23

6-Seattle at 1-Carolina
NFC Divisional Playoff Game

A Case for the Seahawks: From last year's epic comeback to beat Green Bay in the NFC Championship to last week's victory over the Vikings on a missed field goal, it seems like the Seahawks have had some luck on their side in recent playoff history. Maybe this team is just one of those teams that just finds ways to win this big games. They come into this game with a swagger and a mentality. They are the defending NFC champs for two straight years. They will bring a cockiness and confidence into this game that might be too much for the Panthers to handle. They have played 9 playoff games since 2012, so you know they are battle tested. By the way, they have Russell Wilson too. Wilson can simply win a game by himself, and he always plays well in these playoff games.

A Case for the Panthers: At 15-1, they were the best team in the NFL all year long. They already went into Seattle and came back to beat the Seahawks earlier in the year. They aren't afraid or intimidated by them at all. Every time they play the Seahawks, the games are close. Even last year's Divisional Playoff loss to Seattle was close till the 4th quarter. The way the year played out, it just seemed like it was their year from start to finish. Plus, you have the MVP of the league this year in Cam Newton. He can take over the game himself, put this team on his back, and win the game on his own. Finally, this will be the Seahawks third straight road game going back to Week 17, and it will be their second straight game in the Eastern time zone. That has to be a factor in Carolina's favor.

Prediction: CAROLINA (-2) over Seattle: I know a lot of people are going to pick the Seahawks, but I'm not one of them. This has all the makings of a classic game, and I think it will be close. Russell Wilson vs. Cam Newton will be they guys that decide this game. I think Newton makes one more big play to win it late.

Final Score: Panthers-24 Seahawks-20

Broncos 2015 Playoffs Storylines

The Broncos enter the 2015 Playoffs as the #1 seed for the third time in four years. It is the fourth straight year with a bye, and it will be the fifth consecutive year that they will be playing in the Divisional Round of the NFL Playoffs. There are only eight teams left, and the Broncos have a chance to make it to the Super Bowl and win a third Lombardi Trophy. It has been a very strange year for the Broncos, but once again the Broncos sit in position to go the Super Bowl with homefield advantage throughout the AFC bracket. Here are the storylines for the Broncos as they prepare for their matchup with the Pittsburgh Steelers and a run at Super Bowl 50...

1) Orange Crush: The Broncos defense finished #1 overall, #1 against the pass, #1 against the run, and #1 in sacks in 2015. Their defense has been the best in the NFL all year long. They have carried the Broncos to a 12-4 record, and now it is on them to put it all together in the playoffs. Make no mistake: If the Broncos are going to get to and win the Super Bowl, the defense will have to play the way they did all year long and carry them there. They say that defense wins championships, and the Broncos have a Super Bowl caliber defense, but they have to prove it in these big moments. It is on them.

2) Offensive Consistency: No matter who the QB was for the Broncos this year, their offense was inconsistent all year long. They had trouble running the ball at times. Their offensive line has struggled to protect a key moments. Their running backs were up and down, and their receivers dropped way too many key passes. They struggled in the red zone, and there were times where they would go 3 and out in stretches of games. It was certainly frustrating to watch this team on offense at times, and if it wasn't for their defense, then they probably wouldn't even be in the playoffs. The Broncos only scored 30 or more points once as an offense this year. That doesn't sound like the recipe for a Super Bowl winning team. They have to somehow find a way to put together a complete, solid, and mistake-free game to have any chance of going deep in the playoffs. It is hard to see them becoming an offensive juggernaut in the postseason, but they have to be consistent on all levels. If they do that, then they will give themselves a great shot of advancing to the Super Bowl.

3) The Sheriff's Last Ride: Peyton Manning gets the start in the Divisional Round, and he had his worst season as a pro since his rookie year in 1998. Whether it was the result of a nagging foot injury that finally sidelined him for six weeks or the fact that he is a 39-year old aging QB, no one really knows for sure why he struggled. Maybe the rest will help him. Hopefully, Manning is feeling as healthy as he can be, and he can play at a high enough level to help the Broncos win. Can Manning put together two solid games in a row at home to send himself and the Broncos to Super Bowl 50? That will be the question on everyone's mind as the playoffs begin. Perhaps this will be the fitting way for Manning to end his career. A year in which he struggled the most just seems to come together for one last glorious run to a Super Bowl victory, and he rides off into the sunset with another Super Bowl under his belt. It doesn't seem likely, but sometimes sports can create moments like this. Peyton needs to somehow be Peyton one last time.

4) Battle Tested or Battle Scarred?: This is the fourth straight year the Broncos have had a bye. They exited the playoffs in awful fashion the last three years. The loss to Baltimore in 2012, the destruction at the Super Bowl in 2013, and the no-show effort in the loss to the Colts in 2014. Twice, they had a bye and lost in that first game at home. Do those experiences help them in any way this year in the playoffs? Or do the Broncos now have the stigma of faltering in the biggest games? One way or another we will find out. I certainly think that the playoff experience is a positive, and if the Broncos advance all the way to the Super Bowl, then I'm sure that will be one of the reasons why they did. Being in big games helps teams prepare for other big games down the road. In addition, to the playoff games in the past few years, Denver played in many close, playoff-type games this year against some high quality teams. Has that prepared them for this playoff run? Let's hope that is has.

5) Pressure Mounting: Whatever Peyton Manning decides to do after this season, there is a very slim possibility that he will be playing for the Broncos next year. This is his fourth year in Denver and this is probably the last shot they have with the Hall of Famer to win the Super Bowl. They are 12-4 and have the #1 seed, so they are not a long shot to win the title, and they have a lot of pressure to win-and win this season. This team has a lot of key free agents, and they won't be able to sign them all, so this team will be very different next year. The whole franchise will be different when Manning leaves, no matter who the QB is next year. They have been on top of the AFC the last four years, but they still don't have one Super Bowl title to show for it. They went out in their first playoff game to Baltimore in 2012 in the Rahim Moore debacle. They got buried and destroyed by the Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII, and they went out in a whimper in the Divisional Round at home to the Colts last year. They have a reputation of faltering in these huge games, and they have to find a way to get it done this year. It won't ever be the same for this franchise going forward from here.

1) The cold weather really affected this game. It was the third coldest game in NFL Playoff history, and you can tell that it really affected both teams. It was a war of attrition for most of the game.

2)  The game turned when Russell Wilson turned a fumble into a big completion to Tyler Lockett down to the Minnesota 4-yard line. Seattle was down 9-0 early in the 4th quarter,  and this play by Wilson turned the game around. A few plays later, Wilson hit Doug Baldwin to make it 9-7.

3) Adrian Peterson's fumble two plays later gave Seattle the ball at the Minnesota 35. He was stripped and Kam Chancellor recovered in Minnesota territory. Seattle converted a field goal for a 10-9 lead with 8:04 left.

4) The teams each punted twice in the next 2 possessions, and Minnesota and Teddy Bridgewater put together a clutch drive aided by a pass interference by Kam Chancellor and then a misplay by Chancellor on a pass to Kyle Rudolph to give the Vikings the ball at the Seattle 18 with only 1:23 left. Three straight Peterson runs set up the Vikings for a chip shot 27 yard field goal and the win.

5) Blair Walsh, who was clutch for most of the game and hit three field goals earlier, somehow missed the kick and the Vikings lose a heartbreaker 10-9. My heart goes out to Walsh, the Vikings, and their fanbase. How many awful playoff games has Minnesota lost in the past 40 years? It was just an unbelievable ending to the game. You have to be sick to your stomach if you are a Vikings fan. Just an awful way to lose the game.

6) The Seahawks survive in a game that wasn't an all-time classic, but the combination of the weather, the outdoor game in Minnesota, and the early start, gave it a cool 1970s playoff vibe to it. All it needed was John Facenda narrating the highlights for NFL Films. Seattle somehow advances and now heads to Carolina to take on the Panthers next Sunday in the Divisional Round.

Green Bay-35 Washington-18
NFC Wild Card Game

1) You can't ask for a better start if you are a Redskins fan. A safety on a sack on Aaron Rodgers in the end zone, followed by a field goal, and then a few series later Kirk Cousins hits Jordan Reed on a 24-yard touchdown hookup to make it 11-0 after the missed extra point. It was still early in the second quarter, but it definitely had the feeling of a Redskins rout.

2) The Packers probably put together their most important drive of the year at that point. Rodgers drives them 80 yards and hits Randoll Cobb in the endzone for a 12-yard touchdown and a huge response to make it 11-7.

3) The next series Kirk Cousins fumbles after being sacked and the Packers recover, which leads to a field goal to make it 11-10. You could feel the momentum really turning at this point.

4) The Packers forced a punt, and they put together another touchdown drive of 60 yards with Rodgers hitting Davante Adams for a 10-yard TD, and all of a sudden Green Bay has taken a 17-11 lead heading into halftime. You had the feeling going into the half that the Redskins were in trouble.

5) The Redskins put together a really nice drive to start the half, and they took the lead on a Cousins 3 yard touchdown run on 3rd and Goal to give to the Skins an 18-17 lead. It was a great answer coming out of the half, and you thought this game might come down to whoever had the ball last.

6) The Packers didn't panic and once again they moved the ball and answered the Redskins score with another touchdown drive capped off by a James Starks 4 yard run to make it 24-18. The Packers converted a 4th and 1 on the drive with Eddie Lacy picking up 11 yards to keep the drive going.

7) The next two Redskins possessions ended in punts, and the Packers made them pay. A 76 yard drive by Green Bay led to a 2-yard TD run by Eddie Lacy to make it 32-18 with the two-point conversion. The Packers only faced one 3rd down on the drive, and that drive effectively put the game away for good.

8) Everyone was on the Redskins bandwagon all week long, and the only reason to like the Packers was the fact that they have Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers played really well, the Packers actually ran the ball well, and their offensive line protected Rodgers enough-especially from the 2nd quarter on. Rodgers is such a great player that he can win a game on his own, and he certainly played the part in this game. This was a game that we haven't seen from the Packers since October, and even their defense got into the act by completely smothering Kirk Cousins and the Redskins offense. It was a statement win by the Packers, and now they head to Arizona for a date with the Cardinals in the Divisional Playoffs next Saturday night.

Wild Card Weekend Review-AFC Games

Wild Card weekend is over and it sets up a very interesting Divisional Playoff weekend. One of the themes going into the weekend was the fact that the QBs for the home teams had 0 combined playoff starts, and the road teams featured the group of Russell Wilson, Ben Roethlisberger, Alex Smith, and Aaron Rodgers. Well, the proven QBs ended up coming out on top as all four road teams won on Wild Card weekend for the first time since the current playoff format was instituted in 1990. The weekend featured a blowout, a nail-biter, throwback played on negative weather, a statement game by a superstar QB, and a complete XFL-style game in the primetime spot on Saturday. Here are my thoughts on the games based on their order of appearance....

Kansas City-30 Houston-0
AFC Wild Card Game

1) The tone of this game was set when Knile Davis took the opening kickoff 106 yards back for a touchdown to give KC the early lead. It took the air out of the stadium, and from that point on, it felt like the Texans had no chance to win.

2) Besides the kickoff, the only other aspect of note in this game was the play of Brian Hoyer. Hoyer threw 3 interceptions in the first half and fumbled another time in KC territory. He was flat out awful and should have been benched before he threw his fourth pick of the game in the second half. He finished 15-34 for 136 yards and 4 interceptions and a fumble. You can't overcome bad QB play in the playoffs, and Hoyer put up one of the most horrific games of any QB in recent playoff history.

3) This game was 13-0 in the first half, and Houston was driving inside the 5, when Bill O'Brien called a play where J.J. Watt lined up as a wildcat QB and ran it up the middle. Watt was stuffed for a loss of one, and on the next play, Hoyer got picked off at the goal line. That effectively ended the game. The Texans got too cute there and it burned them.

4) The Chiefs didn't have to do too much in the 2nd half. Give them credit though because they were only 13-0 in the first half when it felt like they should have been up like 28-0, but they did what they had to do in second half. Alex Smith picked apart the "vaunted" Texans defense and put together two long scoring drives to really put the game away.

5) The Chiefs got their first playoff victory since 1993, and they now have an 11 game winning streak heading into Foxboro to take on the Patriots in the Divisional Round.

Pittsburgh-18 Cincinnati-16
AFC Wild Card Game

1) This might go down as one of the wildest, craziest, and borderline insane game of all time. It was pouring the entire game, and the first three quarters were pretty mundane. Pittsburgh built a 15-0 lead on their defense, an ice-cold A.J. McCarron, and one of best catches of the year when Martavis Bryant made an amazing catch in the corner of the end zone to give the Steelers what seemed like an unsurmountable lead heading into the 4th quarter.

2) At 15-0, the Bengals finally put together a drive, but Ryan Shazier knocked out Giovanni Bernard on a questionable helmet-to-helmet hit, and Bernard fumbled and the Steelers recovered. The replay showed that Shazier led with the crown of his helmet, and the Bengals and the crowd went nuts because Cincy was getting flagged for some questionable hits earlier in the game. This hit by Shazier sent the game into a frenzy.

3) From there, Vontaze Burfict sacked Ben Roethlisberger deep in his own end, and Big Ben came down on his shoulder and was hurt, and the momentum in the game completely turned. Cincy started to get hot, and they scored a touchdown to make it 15-7. After Landry Jones came in and basically crapped in his pants, so Cincy gets the ball back and A.J. McCarron gets hot and Cincy moves the ball down the field to make it 15-10.

4) After another Pittsburgh punt, Adam Jones had a big return, and A.J. McCarron led a big drive and hit A.J. Green on a 25-yard touchdown on a 3rd and 7 with 1:50 left. Cincy takes a 16-15 lead, and they go for two, but Hue Jackson, who is somehow a hot head-coaching candidate, called the worst play for a two-point conversion and a swing pass to Mohammad Sanu. Now, the Bengals lead 16-15, and this game then turned into the crazy zone.

5) On the very next play, Jones gets picked off by Vontaze Burfict, who was going insane this entire game, and the game looks like it is over and Cincy is going to win the game. Burfict also ran off the field into the end zone after he picked off Jones for some reason that no one seems to understand. Just bizarre.

6) With 1:36 left, at the Pittsburgh 26, Cincy had to run the ball because Pittsburgh had three timeouts left. Jeremy Hill gets 6 yards on first down, but he gets stripped by Shazier and he fumbles and Pittsburgh recovers at their own 9 yard line. The one thing that Hill could not do in that situation was fumble, but he fumbles and now Pittsburgh has a chance.

7) At this point, Big Ben came back into the game with a banged up shoulder just to try and give it a go. He couldn't really throw the ball more than 10 yards, but he gutted it out and put together a very gutsy drive to give his team a chance. Why did Cincy play so off and give them so much more room with Ben obviously compromised by his shoulder? Of course, Roethlisberger goes down the field and even hits Antonio Brown on a 4th and 3 conversion for 12 yards to the Cincy 47, but Pittsburgh has no timeouts and only 22 seconds left. Amazing that the Steelers were even in this game at the point.

8) After an incomplete pass to Antonio Brown, Vontaze Burfict hits Brown in the head with his shoulder, knocks Brown out cold, and gets flagged with a 15-yard unsportsmanlike penalty. Brown is laying there concussed, and for some reason Steelers assistant coach Joey Porter was on the field helping to tend to Brown, and Adam Jones gets flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct for bumping an official while arguing with Porter, and now the Steelers have the ball at the Cincy 17. The Steelers then kick the game-winning field goal with only 14 seconds left. It was a complete meltdown by everyone involved with the Bengals. Burfict went head-hunting for Brown and got flagged, and Adam Jones reverts back to his "Pacman" days and gets flagged that essentially costs Cincy the game. It was one of the craziest moments I have ever seen in a playoff game.

9) The Steelers shouldn't avoid some criticism here. Why the hell is Joey Porter even on the field at this point of the game? It was just ridiculous and it added to the WWE-style aspect of this game. Just another crazy subplot in this crazy game.

10) This game reminded of what Vince McMahon envisioned when he created the XFL. This game will be always known to me as the "XFL" game. It was really just a wild and crazy night in Cincy. The Bengals now fall to 0-7 with Marvin Lewis as a head coach in the playoffs, and Cincy still hasn't won a playoff game since 1990. They were pound-for-pound the best team in the AFC all year, and now they are going home once again after their first playoff game. That is about as bad of a loss you can have as a Bengals fan, and there was a shot of a woman crying in the stands after the game, and it just about summed up what happened in this game to the Bengals and their fanbase.

11) The Steelers move on to Denver to take on the Broncos in the Divisional Round next week, and the injuries to Big Ben and Antonio Brown will be a very interesting theme going into this game.

Peyton Manning Named Starter for Playoffs

In a move that wasn't surprising at all, Gary Kubiak named Peyton Manning the starter for the Divisional Playoff game for the Broncos in two weeks. After Manning came in relief of Brock Osweiler on Sunday, and Denver came back to win the game, the idea that Manning was going to start the playoffs was the prevailing thought. Now it is a reality: The Sheriff is back in town, and the Broncos are going with Peyton Manning for one last ride.

Wild Card Weekend Picks!

Wild Card weekend is here, and as a Broncos fan, I can just sit back and relax and watch all the games unfold-with a very keen eye set towards the two AFC games. I always enjoyed Wild Card weekend because it usually has the chance to have some of the wildest games and craziest finishes of the entire postseason. This weekend features some really intriguing matchups, and it is a rare year because all four road teams are favorites heading into the weekend. Before I get to the predictions, I have a bone to pick with the NFL. Why the hell did they mess with the playoff schedule so much? This is the first time since 1977 that they put games on from the same conference on the same day. In '77, there were only four teams in each conference that made the playoffs, so it made some sense back then, but I'm shocked they did this in this current format. I understand that the networks have a lot of say, but to have both AFC games on Saturday and both NFC games on Sunday is just strange. In any event, the NFL postseason kicks off on Saturday and the race to Super Bowl 50 begins. Here are my picks for Wild Card weekend.....

Last Week's Record: 9-7
Overall Record: 123-125-11

5-Kansas City at 4-Houston (AFC Wild Card Game)

A Case for the Chiefs: They are one of the hottest teams in the NFL heading into the playoffs. They are riding a 10-game winning streak. They feature a really good defense. The Chiefs have only given up 287 points this year, and they feature a very good secondary and a stellar pass rush with Justin Houston and Tamba Hali. Can't you see those two just harassing Brian Hoyer in this game? You do worry a little about Andy Reid's game management at times, but he is a veteran coach who has been on the sidelines for a lot of playoff games. The Chiefs did pound the Texans in Houston in Week 1, and it is hard to see them falling apart in this spot-especially with the run they have put together. Plus, the Chiefs haven't won a playoff game since 1993 when Joe Montana was their QB. You have to think they are due to get one.

A Case for the Texans: After a horrific 2-5 start that saw their defense just look awful, the Texans turned it around to finish the season 7-2 and win the AFC South. The catalyst for that was their defense. They have been very stout since November 1st. Houston has only given up 313 points this year, and now they get an offense that isn't the most explosive in football. Can't you see J.J. Watt just terrorizing Alex Smith all game long? Brian Hoyer is back as their starter, and they have one of the best skill players on the field in this game with DeAndre Hopkins. He can take over any game. Being at home will help them, and throw out the loss to KC in Week 1 because that was a long, long time ago. Plus, everyone is picking the Chiefs as the "sexy" pick in the AFC, so that will give the Texans plenty of motivation.

Prediction: Kansas City (-3) over HOUSTON: Although, I think this game will be close and I give the Texans a legitimate chance to win, I just think that the Chiefs and their momentum will continue for at least one more week. KC is due for a playoff victory, and I think they will get it this week.

Final Score: Chiefs-23 Texans-16

6-Pittsburgh at 3-Cincinatti (AFC Wild Card Game)

A Case for the Steelers: They have the most explosive passing game in the NFL, and they have a Hall of Fame QB, who is also a two-time Super Bowl winner. Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown can't be stopped and they are worth at least 21 points just stepping off the bus. They know they can win in Cincy after beating the Bengals a month ago. They might just have their number. They might have swept the Bengals this year if they didn't make so many mistakes in their loss to Cincy earlier in Pittsburgh earlier this season. A week ago, they needed help to get in, and then all of a sudden the Jets lose to Buffalo and they beat Cleveland, and now they find themselves in the tournament as one of those teams that no one wants to play. Plus, they get the opportunity to knock the Bengals off with A.J. McCarron starting at QB, while Andy Dalton still recovers from his thumb injury. Last year, heading into the playoffs, they were the team that no one wanted to face, and they blew it by losing to the Ravens at home. It is hard to see Mike Tomlin and Big Ben losing another first round game this year.

A Case for the Bengals: Pound for pound this might be the most complete team in the AFC. They are solid in every aspect on their roster. The only question mark they have is at QB with backup A.J. McCarron getting the start in place of Andy Dalton. The Bengals didn't want to see Pittsburgh in this spot, but they haven't won a playoff game since 1990, and Marvin Lewis hasn't won a playoff game in his tenure as Bengals coach, with a record of 0-6. They are certainly due for a win this year. What better way to get that coveted playoff win with a victory over their arch rival. Everyone is picking the Steelers, and you have to think that will motivate the Bengals here. Even with McCarron at QB, they should be able to move the ball on this Pittsburgh defense because they have guys like A.J. Green and Tyler Eifert leading the way. Plus, they are at home in primetime on Saturday night. This has all the makings of a big effort and big performance by the Bengals to finally get that playoff victory.

Prediction: CINCINNATI (+3) over Pittsburgh: I'm not going to be surprised if the Steelers win this game, but I just have a feeling that this is the Bengals moment. Even with McCarron starting at QB, I think Cincy finds a way and gets Marvin Lewis his first playoff win as head coach, and the Bengals will send themselves to New England for a Round 2 matchup with the Patriots.

Final Score: Bengals-24 Steelers-21

6-Seattle at 3-Minnesota (NFC Wild Card Game)

A Case for the Seahawks: There aren't many other QBs who are playing better than Russell Wilson right now. He is on fire over the last month. Plus, it looks like the Seahawks are getting Marshawn Lynch back for this game. That will certainly help the offense. We know how battle-tested this group is. They have played 8 playoff games since 2012 and have been to two Super Bowls in a row. They destroyed Vikings in this same building a few weeks ago. Their defense shut down the Vikings in that first game, and it looks like Adrian Peterson won't be 100%, so that will definitely be an advantage for them. They might be one of the hottest teams going into the NFC playoffs, and this is definitely a better matchup for them, than if they had to go to Washington.

A Case for the Vikings: They got absolutely destroyed by the Seahawks at home a few weeks ago, but you know how different a game can be a second time around. Nobody, and I mean NOBODY, is picking them to pull off the upset. You know how that can serve as motivation for them in this spot. I also think they are playing with house money. They are a young team, who in Mike Zimmer's second year, just knocked off the Packers to win the NFC North. All the pressure is on the Seahawks because they are built to win now, and the Vikings are a team that exceeded many expectations this year. Also, the fans of Minnesota will be pumped up because the Vikings are hosting their first outdoor playoff game since the 1970s, and it will be a very cool scene on Sunday in that stadium.

Prediction: Seattle (-4) over MINNESOTA: The weather will be the story in this game. It looks like the high will be like 9 degrees with a wind chill that will drop it into negative weather and high winds throughout the game. How both teams will handle the weather will be a huge storyline. In any event, I think it is hard to see the Seahawks losing this game. It will be closer than the game they played a month ago, but look for a Seattle win, and the Seahawks punching their ticket to Round 2 and a date with the Panthers.

Final Score: Seahawks-27 Vikings-20

5-Green Bay at 4-Washington (NFC Wild Card Game)

A Case for the Packers: The Packers started 6-0 and finished 4-6 their last 10 games, and one of those wins was the Hail Mary win over the Lions. Although they have struggled mightily the last few months, you still like your chances when Aaron Rodgers is your QB. I know their running game stinks, and I know that their offensive line can't protect right now, but when you have one of the best QBs on the planet on your team in a playoff game, you have a legitimate chance to win the game. Couldn't you just see Rodgers putting this team on his back and winning this game on his own? I know I could. Also, if you are a Packers fan, can you see a scenario where Kirk Cousins just implodes and the Packers defense takes advantage and gets a few turnovers? Don't sleep on the Packers here-especially since most of the nation is picking against them.

A Case for the Redskins: They have been the better team over the last two months than the Packers. They are at home in front of a fanbase that has been pleasantly surprised by this group and is legitimately excited and pumped up for this game. Also, Kirk Cousins has been one of the 2-3 best QBs in the entire NFL the last two months. You have the like the mojo that the Redskins have with the whole "You Like That" motto. Plus, are we sure that the Packers offensive line is going to be able to hold up to the Skins pass rush? Also, believe it or not, but the Skins have the coaching advantage with Jay Gruden over Mike McCarthy. This could be one of those games where Kirk Cousins continues his hot streak, and Washington just puts it on the Packers.

Prediction: Green Bay (+2) over WASHINGTON: I know the smart play is to pick the Redskins here, but I just have a feeling that Aaron Rodgers is going to pull something off in this game. I expect a really close game. This might be the game of the weekend. But, I have a hard time betting against Rodgers, and I see a late comeback and a late win for the Packers to send them to Arizona next week.

Final Score: Packers-27 Redskins-24

Broncos Clinch AFC West With Win Over Chargers as Manning Returns!

The Broncos clinched the AFC West and the #1 seed in the AFC, due to the Patriots loss on Sunday, with a 27-20 win over the Chargers at Sports Authority Field at Mile High. It was a game that featured the Broncos turning the ball over 5 times in just over a half, and then the Broncos turned to Peyton Manning in relief of Brock Osweiler to rally the troops and get the win for the Broncos. There is so much controversy surrounding the game and use of Manning, but the bottom line is that the Broncos needed this win to avoid losing the division and finishing as a wild card, but Gary Kubiak made the gutsy call

1) You can't ask for a better start with Demaryius Thomas 72 yard catch and run for an early 7-0 lead two plays in the game. It was the perfect way to start the game, and you had a feeling that Denver was going to run away with this game and #1 seed.

2) The Broncos just completely melted down from there. Five turnovers in the next six possessions. Emmanuel Sanders fumbled inside the five after a long catch and run. Both Osweiler interceptions weren't his fault. One was off of Jordan Norwood's hands on a third down. Another pick was a result of Brock's arm getting hit while he was throwing. A blindside sack and a forced fumble on Osweiler forced another turnover deep in San Diego territory. Then, C.J. Anderson coughed it up in the third quarter deep in their own territory. It is not Osweiler's fault because he played a pretty good first half, but the team needed a spark, and the Broncos were facing a must-win situation with the AFC West and the #1 seed on the line, and Kubiak felt like the team needed something to change. This game should have been 17-3 or even 21-3, instead it was 13-7 San Diego in the third quarter, and it felt like the game was going to slip through their hands. You can't fault Brock and it was a questionable decision and a gutsy one, but it paid off. You just can't have Peyton Manning sitting on the sideline with the #1 seed and the AFC West slipping away, so Kubiak made the move and it ended up paying off.

3) It wasn't like Manning was vintage Peyton, but he checked into the right run plays, completed a few passes to Thomas and Sanders, drew the Chargers offside a couple of times, and it was enough to get the team going, produce 20 points and help the team get the win. Amazing story and totally bizarre. Forget about the QB controversy because for this game and this moment with everything on the line, Manning provided enough of a difference to get the Broncos over the hump and win the game.

4) The Broncos defense did a heck of a job once again. When your offense commits five turnovers, your defense can only do so much, but the Broncos defense did it once again. The usual guys played well like they always do, but give guys like Derek Wolfe and Bradley Roby credit. I thought both of those guys played really well. Also, Shiloh Keo makes a key interception late to set up Ronnie Hillman's game-winning touchdown run to give the Broncos the 27-20 lead. The defense did have some spotty moments on the last Chargers drive, and on a 4th and 6, Philip Rivers had a wide open receiver in the middle of the field, but as the pocket collapsed, he was forced to throw early and the pass was intercepted. The only mistake this defense made in this game was when Aqib Talib blew a coverage and Phillip Rivers threw an 80 yard touchdown to give the Chargers a 20-17 lead early in the 4th quarter.

5) The day started with the Patriots losing to Miami, so the #1 seed was in play for the Broncos. Then, KC was in complete control over the Raiders, so the Broncos were either going to win and get the #1 seed or lose and get the #5 seed. It was an amazing set of circumstances for this game to play out. Then, Denver and Osweiler comes out on fire, but they turned the ball over five times, and you are thinking "Holy Shit, we are going to blow this game, and end up as a wild card on the road at Houston next week." Then, to add more intrigue, Manning comes in the game in relief and the Broncos rally to win the game, finish 12-4, win the West, and now have homefield throughout the playoffs in the AFC. Just bizarre and wild.

6) I knew this game was going to be close all week. That is just how the Broncos played virtually every game this year, so why would we change anything at this point. This game should have been a run away victory for the Broncos, but miscues and turnovers kept this game close, and now they are in a dogfight with the 4-11 Chargers. But, like they proved all season long, their defense made the plays when they needed to, and their offense did just enough at the end to win the game. This game was a microcosm of the entire Broncos season.

7) Hats off to John Elway, Gary Kubiak, and the entire Broncos team and organization. A 12-4 season, a 5th straight AFC West title, and the #1 seed for the third time in four years in the AFC. Also, this might be the most inconsistent 1 seed in recent memory, and nothing will surprise me when the Broncos play their first playoff game in two weeks, but that is for another time. Let's just enjoy this and enjoy the week off and watching the first round games on Wild Card weekend.

Broncos-Chargers Week 17 Preview

The Broncos enter Sunday's season finale with a lot on the line. A win would give them the AFC West and most likely the #2 seed in the AFC and bye in the first round. A loss could cost them the division and most likely a wild card game on the road next week. The Chargers come in at 4-10, with a team that is banged up and has nothing to play for. Why does this game scare me? First, the Chargers have Phillip Rivers, and when you have a guy like Rivers, you are never out of any game. Secondly, the Chargers had 10 days off since their last game on Christmas Eve, and the Broncos played a physical game on Monday night, so they only have had 5 days rest. That makes a big difference. Lastly, the 2015 Broncos never make anything easy. No matter who is playing at QB, the Broncos give their fans a heart attack every week, and their style of play is very conducive to low scoring, close games. I think they will find a way to win this game, but I expect another close one.

San Diego (+9) over DENVER:
Final Score: Broncos-20- Chargers-19

Week 17 Picks and 2015 NFL Playoff Schedule Predictions!

I'm going with a little bit of a different format for this week's picks. I'll list the meaningless games first with no real analysis attached. Then, I'll breakdown my picks for the other Week 17 games that are important. Finally, I'll add my Playoff Schedule Predictions at the end. I'll leave the Broncos-Chargers preview for a separate column. Here we go with the picks for Week 17...

Last Week's Record: 9-7
Overall Record: 114-118-11
(HOME TEAM IN CAPS)

Meaningless Games:
ATLANTA (-3) over New Orleans
Washington (+3) over DALLAS
Detroit (+1) over CHICAGO
NY GIANTS (-3) over Philly
SAN FRANCISCO (+3) over St. Louis

Games with Playoff Implications:
New York Jets (-3) over BUFFALO: This is usually a game that the Jets would lose, but I just think that they will find a way to grind out a win over Rex Ryan and the Bills in Buffalo to gain a playoff berth. You know Rex will have his team very fired up and ready to knock the Jets out of the playoffs, but I just have a feeling that the Jets will get it done. They have played very well the last month, and they are the better team, and they will be a very dangerous team once the playoffs begin.

Tampa Bay (+10) over CAROLINA: The Panthers will win this game outright, but I think it will be closer than the spread. Carolina will finish 15-1 and lock up the #1 seed in the NFC.

New England (-9) over MIAMI: The Pats will take care of business and pound the Dolphins in Miami to take the #1 seed in the AFC.

CINCY (-7) over Baltimore: Cincy won't sleep on the Ravens, and they will finish 12-4 and rebound from their tough loss in Week 16 to the Broncos, and they are most likely looking at the #3 seed.

Jacksonville (+7) over HOUSTON: The Texans will win the game, and Brian Hoyer will get the start at QB for them, so they will clinch the AFC South and the #4 seed as they finish 9-7. Nice work by Bill O'Brien in getting this team to the playoffs after a 1-4 start to the year.

Pittsburgh (-9) over CLEVELAND: The Steelers will take out their frustrations on the hapless Browns and win this game going away, but they will finish 10-6 and on the outside looking in because the Jets will win in Buffalo.

Tennessee (+7) over INDY: The Colts have to win, Houston has to lose, and 8 other games have to break right for them to make the playoffs. Their odds of that happening are like 3,000-1. I don't even know if they will win this game because Andrew Luck, Matt Hasselback, and Charlie Whitehurst are all injured for this game. They might have to start either Josh Freeman or Ryan Lindley for this game. Yikes!

Kansas City (-4) over Oakland: I think the Chiefs will finish the season with 10 straight wins and an 11-5 record. I think this game will be close, and the Raiders will fight hard to get to 8-8, but I have to give the edge to KC to finish out their run and win this game at home.

Seattle (+7) over ARIZONA: I think Arizona is the best team in the NFL, but I don't know if they are going to go all out for this game, even if they have a chance at the #1 seed in the NFC. I think Seattle will play with more desperation to avoid being the #6 seed. Arizona finishes 13-3 and #2 seed and Seattle finishes 10-6 and the #5 seed.

GREEN BAY (-3) over Minnesota: As bad as the Packers have looked at times, I would be shocked if they don't take care of business and efeat the Vikings at home in Lambeau Field on Sunday Night Football with the AFC North on the line. The Packers win and get the #3 seed and the Vikings finish 10-6 and get the #6 seed. These two teams will square off once again the following week during Wild Card Weekend.

2015 NFL Playoff Schedule Predictions:
I think that the NFL will give FOX the late Sunday game on Divisional Weekend because FOX only has 1 game that weekend because NBC will get the early NFC game on that Saturday. That will give CBS the late Sunday game on Wild Card Sunday in Round 1. I'm also basing this off the fact that nothing major changes on Sunday and the likely results happen in Week 17.
