The Broncos went into Las Vegas on Sunday and came out of there with another loss to the Raiders. Las Vegas won the game 32-23, and the Broncos fell to 2-2. It was a disappointing game because it really felt like the Broncos had a good chance to win the game. A Melvin Gordon fumble in the second quarter and a defensive meltdown on the last drive ended Denver's hopes. Here are my thoughts on the game....
1) The Broncos had all the momentum and with the game tied 10-10, they were driving in the second quarter. Melvin Gordon fumbled and the Raiders picked it up and returned it for a touchdown. The Raiders missed the extra point, but at 16-10 that play was the difference in the game and turned it back into the Raiders favor. Gordon has had a lot of fumbling issues with the Broncos and it came back to bite us once again.
2) The other key moment was when the Broncos had cut the lead to 25-23 midway through the 4th quarter. The Raiders got the ball and went right down the field and put in another touchdown to make it 32-23. Josh Jacobs had another big day against the Broncos defense and so did Davante Adams. It was disappointing that the Broncos defense got thrashed at the end of the game. Clearly, the Raiders still have our number.
3) Russell Wilson played his best offensive game of the season and finished with 2 TDs passing and 1 rushing TD. The problem is that the Broncos still lost. The offense was really bad in the third quarter and had three straight 3 and outs. I think that the offense is trending up but still not there yet.
4) Javonte Williams got hurt in the 3rd quarter and tore his ACL and is out for the season. It is a really devastating blow for Williams and the Broncos offense. Now, the Broncos have to turn back to Melvin Gordon and rely on him the rest of the way. Randy Gregory also suffered a knee injury and is out at least four weeks which is unfortunate because Gregory was playing really well for the defense.
5) This 2-2 start is really disappointing. I honestly expected more from this team and Russell Wilson and the offense. I know it is a long season and there are many games left to get it going, but it hasn't been the start I expected from this new look Broncos. Unfortunately, this team looks a lot like the Fangio Broncos from the last few years.
6) Denver heads home and hosts the Colts on Thursday Night Football. They are banged up and need a win at home. They have to find a way to win this game, rest up and get ready for the Chargers next week.
