Vic Fangio is Out as Denver Head Coach

On Sunday morning, the Broncos parted ways with Vic Fangio as head coach. Fangio lasted three years in Denver and finished with a 19-30 record. It wasn't a surprise that he was let go and the feeling around Denver was that it was going to happen and GM George Paton was going to move on. The following are the important facts and reasons why Fangio didn't work out in Denver or was given another year:

1) Not only did he finish 19-30 overall as a head coach, Fangio finished 1-11 against the Raiders and Chiefs combined. His divisional record was 5-13 overall in his three years. Not good at all.

2) He only won one game with the Broncos in his three years when they were trailing at halftime (2020 vs the Chargers). Only ONE.

3) He put together really good defensive units, but his defenses never consistently got a big stop in big spot throughout his time in Denver.

4) His three main QBs in Denver were Joe Flacco, Drew Lock, and Teddy Bridgewater. The lack of production at QB ultimately did him in.

5) He fired Rich Scanagarello after one year as OC in 2019 and picked Pat Shurmur to replace him. Shurmer was not good at all in 2020 and even worse in 2021. The offense just regressed every year under Fangio.

6) Fangio struggled with game-management, clock-management, and challenges at times, and he certainly wasn't great in that area. I don't think he was as bad at it as some people in Denver feel that he was, but he definitely wasn't good in that regard. He is great defensive coordinator and great defensive mind. His players didn't quit on him, but ultimately it didn't work out, and it was understandable that the Broncos decided to move on.
